49 years ago today
My wife and I got married. It's been a pretty smooth run up until July 17th. She was coming back from the mailbox and stepped on a hickory nut. That sprained her ankle and broke a bone in her foot. Then she went down on her right hand breaking the head off her Ulna and also breaking her Radius ahead of her elbow. She also broke the worst bone in her wrist that takes forever to heal and has the potential to cut off the blood supply to her hand. If that wasn't bad enough she face planted shoving 2 of her front teeth up in her gums and also ripped open her lip.
After she retired I made her carry her cell phone with her at all times so if one of us needed help we could call the other one. I was in the basement working and didn't even know she was outside. I got a call from her, and the just the sound of her panicked voice scared the crap out of me. I ran out to her as she sat in the driveway all covered with blood from her lip. She said I think I broke my arm. That was the understatement of the year. I tried to help her up to put her in her car, but that caused her too much pain, so I called the squad. They got her loaded up and took her to the local hospital, which was a huge mistake.
We finally got her to a real hospital where the surgeon took 4 1/2 hours to put her arm back together. He came out to talk to me after they finished and told me what they had to do. She wound up with a metal plate holding her bones together with a total of 8 screws. This Dr. was a hand and arm specialist and he told me that her arm was in the top three worst messes he had ever worked on, and he's done thousands of surgeries.
She spent 3 days in the hospital, then was transferred to another hospital closer to home that had an acute therapy section where she spent 4 more days under going therapy.
Then I got to bring her back home. She went to the oral surgeon and he wired up her teeth, and she still can't eat solid food for another month. She is going to the same therapy outfit I went to for my shoulders years ago, and they are slowly getting her joints moving again after being immobilized for so long. It's been a long agonizing road for her so far, but she is slowly getting better.
She has osteoporosis which contributed to the destruction and will slow the healing process, but she is finally able to start helping me a little with all the "women's work" around the house.
All this has made me realize how fortunate I am to have her as my wife. As bad as this episode was, it could have been much worse.
