Hey you're supposed to wait for 911 to show up. Like we're suppose to call the cops and wait.

So back slapping worked huh? I think your people needs to go and take Heimlich class. Might as well take a first aide class and make it a day of it.

I'm concerned with this effect you have on people that causes them to choke?

I'd have to say that the worst experience would be looking into a parent's eyes and telling them their child is dead because they failed to learn or perform such a simple act as clearing an airway.

I have only used the Heimlich maneuver once. it was on my dog while she was eating. she came running to me and used the same universal sign as humans. she was scratching at her throat and mouth

Yep, any time you actually do something yourself, they say "let the authorities handle it."

In 30 years of EMS, I've had a surprisingly large number of choking calls. In most cases, the patient has been saved by a bystander with some training, no matter how recent. I believe that the Heimlich is taught as part of the Citizen CPR courses, & that has saved a lot of people.

I don't think anyone should have a baby unless they have first completed a first aid course. If a woman (or her prospective baby daddy) doesn't have the time or the brains to take a course, she needs to stay on the pill --- until she reaches menopause.

One tip they don't teach: Do not feed a little one who is running around --- have the kid sit still. It's too easy for children to partially swallow a hunk of food & get an airway obstruction.

And never, ever hand a small (hungry) child a weiner.
It is the perfect-size throat plug!
