ammo id help please
i was given some cartridges that appear to be 30-06 FMJ. most have a red tip and are marked 7 S 43, and some are either orange or maybe tan tipped with T W 53 on the head stamp. anyone have an idea of what these are. thanks

Red / orange tips indicate tracers.
TW-53 = Twin Cities Ordnance Plant (Minneapolis, Minnesota)
7 S 43 = Most likely SL (St. Louis Ordnance Plant - St. Louis, Missouri) could also be LS (Lone Star Army Ammunition Plant - Texarkana, TX)0 -
Typical military loadings will include: Armor-piercing (AP), AP-Incendiary, Ball, Blank, Dummy, Gallery, High Pressure Test, Incendiary, and Tracer. Many of these will be identified by colored bullet tips. The following is a list of commonly found colored bullet tips on .30-06.
Black: AP
Black/Silver: AP Plate Test
Blue: Incendiary (also tracer from Argentina)
Green: AP from UK, Tracer from Argentina
Green/White: Frangible
Green/Tan: Frangible
Orange: Tracer
Red: Tracer (also some Incendiary from UK, and AP from Argentina)
Silver: Armor-piercing Incendiary
White: Tracer, unfinished Frangible,
Yellow: Observation and Proof rounds (AP from Belgium)
The problem is that for collectors a single round or a stripper clip or en bloc clip or section of cloth belt or metallic links or the contents of an individual 20 round box or feed tray strip may have had the painted tips falsely applied or counterfeited or surreptitiously added in order to deceive for profit...
Also ammo made since 1886 in approx 168 countries of the course of 130+ years you can virtually guarantee that somebody somewhere sometime used a different paint scheme or the paint has aged and been affected by its environment fading or altering or losing its color coding...
But I thought this might be helpful as a quick reference guide.
