Crazy cheap bolt action rifles

Remington has a 783, Savage has Axis, Ruger has The American. All these rifles can be had for under 300.00 in the used market. I remember the inexpensive Remington 770 rifle and that it foreign made and poor quality. Whats the story on these? Thanks, Steve45

    Coworker loves his Ruger American .308.
    Have read the 783 is junk. I've never heard anything bad about the Axis except it's ugly as sin!

    Spend a bit more and if you get lucky snag a vintage Remington model 721 or 722 or 725

    Unless you are buying a Cooper or a custom shop gun you can't be beat.

    Maybe a husqvarna if you can find one or a herters...

    Question. Does the Winchester XPR fit this category? I think it does but I've never held one let alone shot one.

    Simple, supply and demand. Everybody and their BIL's, are either making or buying black rifles. ( Recently, saw a add on-line for a NIB, AR, @ $350.00,) This has very negatively, affected the bolt action market. The manufacturers have to drop their prices, just to sell them.

    Second that on the Ruger American. It is hands down the best "bargain" rifle out there IMO. The Axis is OK and the Remington 783 and 770 will get the job done, but very cheaply made rifles that may or may not stand the test of time. For someone that hunts with the rifle and may shoot it a few times a year, they are probably fine, but the Ruger American rifle is way better quality.

    One more tidbit on "bargain rifles". The older models of the Mossberg ATR100 (All Terrain Rifle) and the 4X4 rifles were actually made by Howa. They were identical to the Howa 1500 series and were outstanding rifles. Not sure who makes the Mossberg bolt action rifles now, but I had a ATR100 and a 4X4 rifle and they both were very accurate, solid rifles.

    I remember when the Remington 788 came out.

    My 1st rifle I ever bought for myself was a 788 in 222. I still have it. I learned how to shoot, reload and varmint hunt with that rifle.

    I still have 4 788's
    222
    22-250
    6mm rem
    308.

    All were made before 1980 when they changed the safety. Great guns super accurate.

    The stuff I see now just looks cheap.

    Don't forget the Savage Axis, these budget rifles will far superior groups than any Rem or Ruger. Even their pricey models, plus they come with the patented Accu-trigger. The Accu-trigger is outstanding and IMHO better than a Giesselle or Timney.

    I picked up a TC Venture all weather for just a little over 300.00 awhile back to use when the weather is bad. I like it enough that it has become one of my favorite hunting rifles

    Not sure if they still do, but HOWA also made the Weatherby Vanguards for quite awhile, and they are great guns for the $$

    I've been looking at the Vanguard II. There's a much better stock on it now compared to the earlier black plastic crap. I have a whole pile of 270W brass and no 270 to put it in. We all know what that means.

    Howa still makes the Vanguard . When S&W was selling bolt rifles a few years ago Howa made them also . Smith sold them as a model1500 . Great guns regardless of the labeling .

    Been very happy with ours in .308

    I too have a few 788's.
    Unbelievable accurate.
    Many a time at the 200 yard range, my plain jane 22/250 with my handloads, made a few fellow shooters shake their heads as they looked at their $900 rifles that just can't group as well as my $275 gun.

    I have had several Remington 788s. All were reliable and accurate. I still have the 308 and the 44 magnum. Around here, you are not going to get the 44 magnum for anything like $300-$350.

    Don't leave out the T/C Compass. I got one in 6.5 CM with a Vortex scope that is a real pleasure to shoot, and very accurate for just over $325.
