Anybody Like Buttermilk?

I enjoy a tall glass of cold buttermilk with a dash of salt with my evening meal most days. It has been an acquired taste for me that goes way back to my earliest memories. My mom used to drink it and also added a dash of salt and would give me the fork she used to stir it in. I would lick the fork clean and got used to the sour taste as well as the thicker than milk consistency. I would estimate this went on for a few years before I ever had my first full glass of the stuff. You might say I was weened on buttermilk.

Over the years there have been several brands that came and went and one in particular was a favorite. Sadly no longer made. A dairy called Sealtest had a product that had little golden flakes of butter in it! Oh boy it was good!

Most of the people I have known in my life detest buttermilk as a drink, only using it for cooking purposes. I tried to get all 4 of my sons to drink it when they were young, but none took a liking. Should have used the lick the fork method but ahhh, really, them not liking it made more for me to drink! 8-)

My dad never could stand the stuff but weened me on the other favored beverage of my life and that was BEER! 8-)

Anywho, anyone here like or dislike BUTTERMILK? There was this guy back in basic training that drank his with several teaspoons of sugar added! :o

    And For what ever reason, I think it goes especially good when having eggs Benedict must blend good washing down the hollendaise sauce.

    I like it, too. When I was young, I practically lived on milk. I thought buttermilk must have butter in it, just like chocolate milk has chocolate. Made Mom buy me some. One sip and I soon discovered the error of my logic.

    Later in life, I came to really like it. I have it as a treat now and again, either by the glass or on cornbread for breakfast. The Irish have it on oatmeal, and on a bowl of good Irish steel-cut oatmeal, it's amazing.

    I will drink it but its not something I relish.

    About the only time I even have buttermilk is when I am making cornbread, then I drink what is left over.

    Now regular milk is great and drink 2 glasses a day.

    when i was a little kid i stayed at grandads(where i live today) as often as possible...he would get up and have a big glass of milk in the morning...so one day when i got up i poured me a BIG glass of milk and took a BIG drink and spit it all over the kitchen floor...buttermilk...first and last

    I grew up on a dairy farm of ~125 head of cattle. I drank the milk from various stages including colostrum and could often tell where they had been grazing by the taste. That said, I never had store milk until I was ~19. I have never bought buttermilk and not sure I know what it tastes like though if it is a natural process, like the natural separation and aging of milk, then maybe I do.

    It took me a long time to learn my parents were right about buttermilk... and a lot of other things.
    But now, when I buy buttermilk to make cornbread, I usually drink more than I bake.

    I am told that the cultured buttermilk we drink today is nothing like the buttermilk that came straight from the butter churn years ago. I don't know about that, but I'd love to do a comparison.

    Had an aunt who churned every morning. That's where I got my liking for buttermilk. The new cultured stuff doesn't hold a candle to REAL buttermilk made from a Jersey cow's production, but I still like a glassful every once in a while, and cook with it regularly.

    When I was a child I was forced to drink that nasty milk that went bad by my step mother. Haven't touched that since. A little while back I was watching "Alien Nation" where the aliens were getting drunk off spoiled milk made me wonder maybe I might like it now? I might give it a try if I see it.

    Love it, just add cornbread and some onions cut up in it makes it even better.

    Back in the 1930's, if you wanted butter, you had to make your own. Mom made some at least twice weekly since there was no electricity to keep things cool. That means buttermilk often. Drink it or do without.

    No one in my family will drink it, except me. Someday people might know what tough living is. Hope not.

    Back in the day we (I) milked the Jersey and mom and my aunt would churn the milk, Yum Yum, fresh cottage cheese and real buttermilk. Kept it in the spring box.
    Always got squirted in the eye with milk when we were dashing the dasher in the old wooden churn, didn't matter which side of the churn you were sitting on.

    It?s kinda like any other homemade food you do a taste test with. It depends on who?s churn you sample. I had one aunt who made the best I ever had and another aunt who would have to improve to be as good as Kroger?s. Even the cultured buttermilk of years ago was better than the cultured buttermilk of today. I think they?ve cut a corner to save a dollar.

    as a kid my mom would would buy a quart on rare occasions she liked it with cornbread crumbled into it .
    I liked it as is when nice and cold my dad brother and sisters not so much .

    I like my butter milk with a dash of black pepper along with the salt. Was how grand dad had it. Lake every one else that was how you made butter. But compared to what is called butter milk in the stores today it cant hold a candle to it. The real stuff had small pieces of butter an high content of cream in it. very thick smooth too. Do not believe what the doctors say. Not to drink it as its bad for your cholesterol. I still drink it.
