Bear around this AM -
Not sure how my dog knew it was there. But he did. Good dog.
Heard my dog issue a low rumbling grow, followed by one bark, about 5:45 AM. While thinking this strange, (he never does that.) He immediately came in to the bedroom and quietly put his head on the edge of the bed. His clue to me for "I want to go out."
Let him out front, he immediately took of around the corner growling, hair on edge.
About 30 seconds later, he wanted back in, in order to go out on the back deck. (2 stories up, overhanging the back woods/pond.) He was bristling, I knew what was up.
About 5-10 minutes later he started barking again. Saw two flashlights on my back driveway, around the edge of the pond. Went out, spoke to the two young boys/neighbors about what was going on.
"There is a bear out here." Me - Yeah I pretty much knew there was. You boys be carefull.
Have no idea how my dog knew what was going on about 2-3 stories below my back deck, about 100' out.
Good dog. Excellent watchdog. Would be a total handful if encountered/confronted.

I have not had a Bear come around the place yet but I have had problems with coons. One of my dogs treed a large boar coon last month. He was in the garden eating a watermelon, typical.
I had a deer get in the garden too. It jumped a 6.5 foot fence. I got her out through the door. The coon got shot with a 45 acp Glock 30s. I would have cooked him up and fed him to the dogs but I wasn't sure if he was sick or not so I didn't take a chance.
You should have broken that 44 mag in proper

Like you Sam, I am sure - I really do not want to kill something, unless absolutely necessary.

Saw my 1st Bear in this part a couple weeks ago. Was down near Jasper Arkansas looking for off road trails and came up on Momma black and her cub crossing a gravel road. She looked healthy - well fed and the cub looked good too. Both ran off as soon as they saw us.
Haven't seen one in person but a tiny skinny Black Bear has been spotted in our town in the past.0 -
We have about 3 hanging around here, due in part to my neighbor/buddy putting corn out, and multiple birdfeeders. He has pictures of them all over his deck. (We all predict he will eventually have one in his house.)
This particular one is about 350#.
I had up until this past week, three peach trees that were absolutely loaded down with peaches. They looked like weeping willows. (Hundreds per tree.) They may have been around for those as well. When I last mowed the yard, there was a nice big pile of bear scat about 15' from one of my trees. My place is fairly deep in the woods, on a somewhat remote Holler. Lots of wildlife around abouts.
My head is on a swivel when I head out to my vehicles around 4:30 am.0 -
The dog and the ferret have decided that squirrels are the enemy - and that they must be driven away at all costs...
I have put out suet cake cages hung from braided steel cables for the birds - put out some "squirrel proof" contraptions from pet smart and I have built a few rube Goldberg anti squirrel devices using some scrap lumber and construction sight debris...
The girls want birds - and bird feeders and the bird fountain bath - humming bird feeders and Martin gourd house hostels...
The squirrels try to eat any food put out - and will rip apart any feeders I place in the yard.
I turn the dog and the ferret loose in the yard on them - they initially dispatched a few but the rodents learn quickly - same with the traps and devices / they learn how circumvent and defeat or destroy them...
I have used a Chinese military pellet rifle to stun them or kill them. The .22 caliber is usually a one shot - one kill but the .177 model with flat points knocks them down and stuns them...
Knocking them off of a feeder or a tree branch is laugh worthy.
We have foxes and hawks and eagles and feral cats that remove - eat - pick clean any squirrel deposited outside of the fence line - it's green acres set aside natural preserve land.
The squirrels are nasty and destructive and invaders who destroy property and our pets hate them...
The reticulated chipmunks on the other hand will eat from bird feeders and use the fountain but don't destroy anything and seem to limit themselves to a fair share - and both the dog and the ferret will chase them or tare ass after them but have not killed any.
One rodent is like a pack of gang bangers - the other seem like okay neighbors.
The pets seem to be okay with the chipmunks but hate the squirrels.
My neighbor plans on taking the safety guards off of some bug zappers and has made some Spanish inquisition death traps for them.
Okay so it's not lions or tigers or bears or emus and ocelots - but it's what I have going on in the yard...

Last time I saw the Bear he was peddling his book "BEAR" at the Gateway Book Store in Knoxville, TN back in March of 1975. I just happened to be in the store that day. That bearded guy, 2nd from Left, in the background is me. 0 -

Lots of bears in NW Arkansas now, more this year than I've ever seen. I run my Drahts in National Forest about 25 minutes from Fort Smith, and we have seen 7 this year. The wife and I ran up to Jasper a few weeks ago looking for bear and elk, but ended up seeing nothing.0 -

Having a bear (or ANY large predator) around occupied houses is great UNTIL IT ISN'T. Those predators have a place but it isn't in the backyard. 0 -
