Interesting gun store apparent cash cow idea

I went into a Local Gun store this afternoon, they are a Glock Blue Label dealer and the blue label pricing has been extended to veterans & I just couldn?t pass it up.

Anyway so Im in there ordering a new Gen5 Glock 34 & in the 20 minutes Im in there 3 different men came in to drop off their guns to be cleaned.

He told me since I was buying this Glock at his shop I am entitled to ?lifetime? free cleaning of the gun.

I jokingly explained I would sooner never clean it before I would have another man clean my gun, he caught my humor and said well you would be surprised how many guns I have sold while doing ?free cleanings? of guns people have bought.

Clever old man with a business model I would have never thought of.


So fess up- have you ever paid someone to clean your gun?

    On that idea, yes I have "paid" someone.

    I change my own oil and I clean my own guns, fish, and game.
    But I don?t shoot nearly as much as some of you folks do.

    After completely disassembling and cleaning a Nylon 66 I paid a gunsmith to put it back together.

    Back when I worked in a gun store the HK-91s were quite popular. Customers had a tough time getting the bolt back into the receiver and would bring the rifle back to the shop for assistance. Hey, nothing was free in that store, so for $10 (a decent amount of money back in the late 70's) the owner would have the customer hand me (or my friend Ron) the rifle and we'd take it into the back shop (out of view of the customer) and pop the bolt back in while Sam (the owner) pocketed the ten bucks.

    Some buyers never did figure out how to get that bolt back into the receiver and came in once a month for the "service". There was no YouTube back then, so there was no way to learn unless someone showed you, and Sam was running a gun store, not firearms training academy.

    In my gunshop days I employed my retired father to clean and reassemble and tinker with customers guns as well as putting together a one sheet data and spec file...

    He was fully booked with a back log - made some good money and brought in many customers...

    Routine cleaning...NO.
    We did have our gunsmith do a tear down,clean,inspect, of wifes '94 30-30 that was her dads. It had sat idle for many of years,no one remembered last time it was shot or cleaned, or if there were any issues. Gunsmith checked it over and said it is still a good strong gun that will outlast us and into our grand kids, go get a deer with it. So, wife did. Got her first ever deer with it. A little one X split, buck. That was several years ago,but made a memory that will last forever.

    Nope. I'll let someone else clean my firearms right around the time I start shooting complete stranger's handloads.

    hey if it sells more guns, it's a great idea! for him.

    I never felt a need to have someone else clean it because

    a) don't want to pay someone
    b) they won't do nearly as thorough a job as I would
    c) have taken guns in to have work done and usually got scratches on the finish. NO no no. nope. never again if I can avoid it.

    I thought about cleaning & working on guns for a side job, but figured I'd get robbed by some bozos thinking I had a pile of guns in my house.

    I've never paid someone to clean my guns but if I were going to have one cleaned by someone else it would be my .50AE Desert Eagle. I hate to clean that gun.

    How big of a store was it? Did he have quite a few employees working there? I just couldn't see it working for us, we are way too busy most of the time to do routine cleanings. We'll help someone out if they are having problems or want to learn how but no way we could handle routine cleanings.

    My Chevy dealer gives free oil change for 3/36,000 when I buy a new truck. Recently had loose filter leak all over my driveway and one other time loose drain plug. They can keep their free oil changes.

    Clean my gun for me. NEVER!

    Yes with a bore brush mounted in a DeWalt drill. Pour in the Kroil until its smokin.' :D

    that was one thing my dad drilled in my head when I was little, as soon as we got back to house and unloaded car, you went to gun closet and got oil, rag and rod and wiped bore, and outside down. if it was freezing he would wait 15=20 minutes for metal to warm up so it didn't sweat, then the clean/wipedown. I remember him saying fingerprints will turn to rust, so wipe em off. still have all his guns and with the exception of an old 98 mauser , all still look like new. had a local "gunsmith" put a scope on the mauser years ago and where he heated the bolt to turn it down and he ground/filed the top of the receiver to mate the scope mounts, those two places will surface rust if not kept oiled.

    I have tried to instill this into my son/grandkids, at least the wipedown as soon as you get home, grandkids have learned it better than my son...

    I've never paid someone to clean one of my guns. But if the price and convenience was right I might consider it. Complete tear down, cleaning, lubing, and assembly of some guns takes quite a bit of time.
