Another pit bull attack! Nine year old girl killed. Wonderful pet gets away from owner.

The breeders have ruined that breed. Much like a hunting dog that chases Deer without the urge to kill people, fighting dogs fought other dogs without any real aggression towards people. The fighting dog breeds used to be pretty much blind to people and would only pay attention to other dogs. Back in the day, a lot of people let their dogs roam free around the yard and neighborhood. Dog fights weren't all that uncommon, the Dogs usually managed to get it sorted out without serious injury. There was always some yahoo that wanted the baddest dog on the block and would buy a fighting breed. The fighting breeds pretty much ignored people, it was their nature.
Seriously, the dope dealers in East L.A. started breeding them to be man sharp to protect the dope houses. This was fifty-some years ago. Man sharp means a dog that will bite humans and/or has a tendency to be man aggressive. Anybody that tells you it is all about the training is wrong. The breed has been screwed up by breeders.0 -

I have received no recall notice on any defect for the dog - which is good because they never have a loaner or a demo available...

Nearly 30 years ago, our 9 year old daughter was playing in our yard when she was attacked by a dog running free. 15 stitches down the center of her scalp. 2 stitches in her left eyelid. 4 stitches in in each forearm- the right forearm broken from the force of the bite. 4 days in the hospital, and 16 IV bags of anti-biotics.
The dog was a 2 yr old Golden Retriever.
The ONLY dog that CAN'T bite is a hotdog. Animals are not machines, and are capable of independent action. Ask a group of K-9 handlers if they know of a fellow K-9 handler that was ever bitten by his own dog- the answer is going to be yes.
While some breeds may be more prone to biting, and some can do more damage than others, you can get bitten by any dog.0 -

I worked in a Vets office summers and weekends for four or five years. I grant you it was a long time ago and Dogs breeds don't remain static. it is all about the ability of a breeder to spot aberrations and cull them.
The worst biters were Cocker Spaniels and the most dangerous were Saint Bernards. At the time Saint Bernards were very popular because of the movie Beethoven, the breeders were pumping them out as quickly as possible regardless of their temperament, they just had to look like Beethoven the Dog.
People tend to apply human values to Dogs. IMO people and Dogs have evolved together and share some common traits, parallel agendas, and lifestyles. But the commonality has its limits.
Example, in the wild the dominant female has the puppies and the pack nurtures the puppies. In the basic instinct part of a Dogs brain there resides the instinct to kill the pups from a non-dominant female and/or a female encroaching on territory. To put it bluntly, it isn't uncommon for a female dog to go to the neighbors house and kill the puppies from another female. You have to ask yourself how this relates to human interaction? It is in a dogs inherited instinct to some degree, stronger in some than others. That instinct appalls most people but is perfectly normal for Dogs. You really can't apply human values to a Dog, some instincts parallel some don't.
That is just one example, there are many others where a Dogs instincts diverge from human values.
I could spot a problem dog at the Vet pretty quickly, after being bitten a few dozen times you learn. If they are acting sullen watch out they are likely to bite. If they pay more attention to your face and/or want to get in your face it is a sign of aggression. Friendly dogs usually sniff butt or are more interested in their surroundings than you. I think the Vet kept me around because Dogs don't particularly like me, my smell, my demeanor, whatever, it's a fact. I was his sacrificial Goat.0 -

I read a piece recently about a guy who is cloning dogs for school guards. He says that there are genetically determined behavioral patterns and he selects a dog that behaves and responds to training the way he wants and has it cloned at great expense. He sets them up to attack an intruder the handler sics them on, and ignore the students.0 -

I had a guard dog that would ignore women and kids but he'd pretty much attack any unescorted grown male who came on the property. Out of the yard and on the street he pretty much ignored people altogether and really wasn't aggressive towards other dogs. Something going on in that dogs brain I never fully understood, but it worked for me. He was bred as a Hog dog, the guard instinct and dislike for grown men in his territory was just an instinct I never really understood. I got him shortly after we had a home invasion episode and his instincts seemed a good fit, accident or something subliminal, I have no idea. Maybe he just sensed my unease when strange men came around?
One thing many people ignore is the gender angle, male and female dogs interact differently depending on a humans gender. Neutering or spaying can mitigate this some, but not conclusively.0 -

Let me say first of all : I am a dog owner - have been all my life .......
It makes me really mad / upset when this happens !
And :
All these IDIOTS that own 'pit bulls' are a real problem : because of their ignorance its a really bad deal !
With that said : I think all 'pit bulls' should be put down !!!
and for their owners :::: well ...........

My wife used Pepper spray on a Pit Bull a few weeks back.
He Got out of the Back neighbors yard, they leave the gate open on their long drive.The PB got in to our yard and started up to our dog and charged.
She has been carrying the spray ( not a gun person), ever since the PB was try to barking and chewing the chain link fence in back, while she was gardening.
The spray worked well, he was rolling on the grass and gravel trying too clear his eyes. The folks in back came and got him, cursing at us. 9 ,mostly in Mexican.
He now stays home but still barks and charges the fence (not big enough to get over). She has the spray and I've got my pistol on me now when we go outside.0
