When is the lobster cheapest in Maine??

I'm thinking of a vacation to Maine and want to schedule it when the lobster fishing is in full swing so I can eat a bunch of fresh lobster at prices as cheap as they gonna get!!!! I love lobster but I don't love the price. Lord I'm cheap!! :lol:

    Two friends of mine planned a trip to Maine to go bear hunting. Two days after they left, i saw them back in town. I asked what happened and one replied:
    ?We got up in Vermont and a sign on the Interstate said ?MAINE-BEAR LEFT.?

    I've been to Maine on Vacation, (1st on Honeymoon [1985]) for roughly 11-12 years. Up and down the Coast.

    Oqunquit, Boothbay Harbor, Stonington Island, Bar Harbor, Mt. Desert Island, etc. etc.

    I always went in June, July, August. Never felt I overpaid for Lobster. The best places, were right beside the wharf, unloaded right off the boats. Some eaten on picnic benches, sitting on same wharf - fighting off the Seagulls.

    My favorite are the stomach on, fried clams. Nothing like them. :D

    Nothing wrong with a bucket of purged steamed clams, with drawn butter either. :D

    Good times, good food. :)






    Did a 14 day Sea Kayaking trip, up the coast, (Island to Island,) somewhat off shore. Paddled up to Lobster boats and bought our evening dinner a few times. Clamed (sp?) at low tide, fished off the kayaks during the day. Etc. etc. That was a really, really good trip. Good times. :)

    Friend was in Maine in June.
    Said Lobster Dinners were cheaper than pizza at home!

    That is pretty much when you get them, outside of Maine. :o

    (And) They ain't cheap, at that point.

    I believe in Summer when they molt so they're light on the meat. I always wanted to try some "softshell" lobsters (like the softshell blue crab). I wonder if they have shops that sell seconds? You know the ones missing a claw or both. Just make sure you're boiling the water to save the bucks.

    Last time I was in Maine, lobsters were pretty much consistently low throughout the summer. The cheapest place is wholesalers, known as "lobster pounds". Unlike fish, which are usually dead & kept on ice, lobsters must be kept alive by running salt water over them, so look for them at the docks where the lobster boats are moored.

    You don't really pay that much more if you eat at restaurants at the towns on the coast listed above. But, a short truck ride away to Martha's Vineyard or Boston, & the prices skyrocket.

    Maine lobster season is between late June and late December. The best time to buy them at a restaurant is in the fall when all the tourist have gone back home.

    I don't know when it is, but it is not Christmas. My girlfriend and I went from Georgia up to Prince Edward Island at Christmas one time, it is one stop north of Maine and is likewise famous for lobsters. We went to the restaurant on PEI and told the waiter "We want a big lobster dinner."

    He looked at us like we were nuts. He said "Christmas is not lobster season."

    Really, really miss some good fresh seafood dinners/meals.

    Not too much of that available here in Extreme NE TN. :cry:


    You can always get a good steak. (Pretty much everywhere.)

    Best time always to buy Maine lobster is when they are on sale at your local market...

    When I was in main it was always where you had them and not when.

    Maine lobster are always good.

    The last time we were in Maine the lobster (roadside) was more expensive than Maine Lobster in the grocery store in Florida.

    Go to the Lobster Shack in Ogunquit. Stay away from the touristy places.

    Since you'll be in ME, hit the Kittery Trading Post. There's a pretty good Class III FFL in Hooksett, off Rte 28 - can't recall the name of it though.

    Don't know when it is cheapest, but wife and I were there this July, and a little 6-inch lobster roll sandwich was $18 almost everywhere. We were so unimpressed by lobster that we didn't bother with a whole lobster dinner. Except for the drawn butter, some of that fake "Krab" has more taste than lobster. There are endless waterside joints offering lobster dinners for $25-$30 or so, but I'd bet that the lobster you get is not much bigger than a crawdad. (It is law that they have to put back any lobster over about three pounds, if I recall correctly. What you get are the "pounders" and maybe pound and a half live weight.)

    Yep, I remember RugerGunz. He made a post on this topic that basically said that the lobstermen weren't making crap. It was the middlemen where the price jumped. The wholesalers I mean. The price that the restaurants charged wasn't couldn't be that much higher than the wholesaler or they'd be too expensive.
