B double e double r you in? (Coors story)
Until just a few years back you couldn't buy alcoholic beverages in Indiana on a Sunday. If you ran out and really had to have more a run for the border was called for.
A really hard partyin' guy I knew told me he once set out on a beer run to Illinois on a Sunday afternoon and woke up on Tuesday in Kansas City. At that time Coors was only available west of the Mississippi and he got it in his head he just had to have some. He had no recollection at all of what he had done on Monday.

Rented a pontoon boat last Sunday on Bull Shoals Lake. Had a Beverage cooler full of Margaritas and maybe 12 beers for 8 people. We got down to the Bull Shoals Damn in Arkansas and were out of adult beverages. This being a Sunday - no booze for sale in Arkansas.
We debated cruising back up to the Missouri side of the lake and restocking up on beer at one of the Marina's but called it a day as we were all toasted.
Good time none the less and boat rental is a lot cheaper than boat ownership.0 -

It was common in the mid 70's to haul Stroh's West and return with Coors.0 -
I remember way back in the day Coors was restricted and many states didn't have it but I grew up in Kansas and 3.2 beer.
Many out of state beer drinkers said they wouldn't drink 3.2 because a person couldn't get drunk on 3.2.
I sure knew a lot of people that got drunk on that weak 3.2 beer but then again that left more for us 3.2 drinkers.

Some years ago (mid 1970's) I did some work in Barrow, Alaska. Alaskan communities are constantly changing from wet to damp to dry to damp to wet, etc ....
I didn't plan ahead and flew into a dry village without any adult beverages. "Not a problem", I thought.
However, it seemed like every local I met was drunk and I got thistier each day.
On the day we flew out, the flight attendants took drink orders as the passengers took their seats.
In those days you could trade a gallon of whiskey for a "local" woman and take her home with you.0 -
my coors beer run story. the backdrop...1978 i was a machinist by day, bar owner partner by night..friday night closing time my buddy was saying he would like to taste that CURS" beer at the time not sold in illinois, nor missouri. oklahoma was the closest, 8 hours hard driving time away. i didn't have to tend bar saturday night- we side eyed each other and said ROAD TRIP!
i pulled $300 cash out, 4 packs of smokes and my big coffee mug. his van's tank was full. drove all night to Miami Oklahoma, we knew the car dealers there, former residents of my hometown..we figured they would direct us where to buy a bunch o'beer
after visiting and breakfast, bought 39 cases of coors cans. headed home by 9:30 am uneventful trip, got to the tavern and put 9 cases into the walkin cooler then divided up the remainder. home to bed by 5. only slept 3 hours decided i needed a beer or 5.
along this same time, the local Sports Boosters and high school faculty had scheduled an exhibition basketball game against the St Louis Football Cardinals[now Arizona Cardinals]Pro Bowlers Roger Werhlie, Jim Hart and other stars do these benefit games in the offseason. all of them were quite talented. a phone call made to the bar informed my brother and i that these guys and a crowd of boosters were coming buy for beer, pizza and drinks afterwards. i thought COOL! since i was the spitting Image of CONRAD DOBLER at the time, meanest man in the NFL this would be fun. Jim Hart was QB at SIU carbondale when i was recruited so he might remember me, probably not.
they came in, 10 behemoths out of 1 stretch limo starved and parched. for 10 guys they would empty 2 pitchers of beer every 9 minutes if that and pizza as fast as we made them. they all agreed i did resemble Dobler. pictures were taken with everyone in attendance, beer flowed and appetites whetted.. as the draft beer slowed, i thought, bring out the Coors Beer! they too could not buy in st louis, only on the west coast trips. 3 finished the night on 3 cases of Coors, with 3 cases sent along for the 1 hour trip to st louis.
EPILOGUE Roger Werhlie probowl strong saftey hated to lose at FOOSBALL and nearly got into a fight.
Ron Yankowski-defensive Tackle had to turn sideways going thru a door.
those guys like beer lots of beer really lots of beer
many laws were broken getting that Coors beer into illinois. besides the expected driving infractions, bootlegging. the van was running EXPIRED license tags also...[ooops]0 -
All you need is a ten and a fiver, a car, and some keys, and a sober driver, b double E double R you in, beer run 0
