If he purchased the rifles from an out of state FFL dealer, then those rifles were legally acquired and he can ship them to himself. If he purchased the rifles from an out of state private party, which in most cases is not allowed, then the rifles must be shipped to an FFL in his home state to be transferred correctly.

MC is (as usual) correct. Had an unusual one today. Buyer lived in ND, FFL receiving the item from us was in Minnesota (Just across the river) it is a long gun. Had to have a review with our compliance person, but all good.

Wouldn't it be easier and cheaper to check it into baggage and bring with rather than ship?

Its easy to fly with a gun.

That said it is legal to ship yourself a gun and ship it back to yourself.
It is also legal to ship from you direct to a gunsmith & a gunsmith who has repaired your gun can ship it directly back to you w/o sending it to an FFL.

Agree with the posters before me. One fine point- the term MAILING refers to the US Mail. SHIPPING includes common carriers such as FedEx and UPS.

Yes, you can legally MAIL an unloaded rifle or shotgun that you already own to yourself. No transfer of ownership.

You cannot MAIL a handgun unless you are a dealer or manufacturer. You CAN ship one you already own to yourself- BUT-
UPS & FedEx require Next Day Air for handguns. That is around $80 now.
