Just finished watching The Shootist... again. It has to be The Duke's best film. Great movie.

    The "Shootist" has some great co-stars along with Wayne starring, definitely my favorite and sadly his last movie. He left us in style ;)

    A fine Wayne movie, along with the Sons of Katie Elder and the Searchers. In fact, there were not many I did not like. EMF has come out with an Italian repro of Wayne's gun from the Shootist. Not a bad repo at all.

    A Great Western II copy, ... of a Great Western, used in a Great Western.
    Jim Martin in AZ made up the gun in the movie with a 50's GW, to be a twin of Wayne's Ivory handled Colt. Opie had to throw it across the bar room after shooting the bartender, and Wayne made it real clear, that wasn't going to happen with his Colt.

    I have, many times, quoted the line from the opening of the movie, "You better find yourself a new line of work, 'cause this one sure don't fit your pistol!".

    I am a huge JW fan.

    The Shootist is a good movie, his last and kind of a swan song to his life but I don't think its his best. There are some non-westerns that I think are really good:

    Hatari is a good movie and the Duke really speaks Swahili in it.

    The Wreck of the Red Witch is a classic

    The Searchers is one of his best, he even thought it was his best performance.

    Red River     is one of my favorites

    The sea chase is a movie not too many have seen. JW is a German Captain in WW2

    Legend of the Lost     is good it's like Indiana Jones.

    Just about any film with Howard Hawks is good but I like Rio Lobo the best of the series.

    I loved The Shootist. Great movie! Great cast.
    I'm a big John Wayne fan too.
    I always loved Big Jake and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. Red River and The Cowboys are a couple others I really enjoy!
    Maybe not his best work, but I love the movies.
    Of course, McClintock, The Searchers, Hatari, etc......Oh hell, I like them all!

    I also like watching The Duke's movies. Another of my many favorites "The Son's Of Katie Elder" and "The Quiet Man", I can rewatch at least every year. Being a movie buff, I have noted over the years that fans either LOVE John Wayne or hate him. Never run across many who are in between. Most of his hater's always say he plays the same character (himself) in everything along with his nonmilitary record.

    I think he was one of Hollywood's BEST!

    In an interview one time, Jimmy Stewart said that the hardest scene he ever did in a movie was in The Shootist. When he was the doctor telling J.B. Books that he was dying of cancer -- when Wayne actually was dying of cancer, and Stewart knew it.

    I heard that he got the most enjoyment from making True Grit.

    It's The Cowboys, and True Grit for me.

    I can/will watch them every time they come on.

    If you're ever in AZ, go see Old Tucson where a lot of these movies were shot, it's well worth the time.

    I watch STZEWS channel almost every hour of the day and night. I have on vcr tapes of every early film he acted in and to watch him develop as an actor at such a young age is fascinating. After all he can credit some of his witticisms to Wyatt Earp himself.

    The Horse Soldiers, The war Wagon, True Grit, I believe that JW has the most acting credits ever. I can not just say that this or that movie, film is his best. Again I think that the supporting actors helped him perform at his best.

    The one interesting thing about JW was his personal life. Very private man that lived Large and rubbed elbows with everyday ordinary people. And while living life used his own experience in life to bring his acting carrier into another dimension.

    Did you recognize "the World's Most Interesting Man" in it?

    I always liked "Big Jake" - some great one liners in it.

    Liberty Valance is one of my favorite westerns. The Alamo is nostalgic for me and the non westerns like Wake of the Red Witch and Blood Alley were good old adventure movies.
