A veteran cop became the ninth NYPD officer to commit suicide this year when he shot himself in the head at his Queens home Wednesday evening ? just a day after a fellow city policeman killed himself, authorities said.

Robert Echeverria, 56, who was assigned to the NYPD?s Strategic Response Group and who worked for the department for more than 20 years, shot himself at his Laurelton home shortly after 6 p.m., police sources said.

Medics responded and rushed him to North Shore University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the sources said.

A neighbor was stunned by the tragedy.

?This is heartbreaking to see a family torn apart no matter the situation,? said Brenden Betts, 23, who works for the Department of Transportation.

?Mental- health awareness is probably the number-one critical issue not being spoken of in this city today.?

The NYPD, reeling amid the rash of suicides, issued a tweet that said, ?To anyone who may be struggling, know that there is support ?available.?

Echeverria?s death comes a day after NYPD Officer Johnny Rios fatally shot himself at about 3 a.m. Tuesday in the Yonkers home he shared with his fianc?e and her kids.

    Very sad! Such a stressful job being a policeman!

    I actually considered police work when I was still in high school. Then I saw a movie around that time, "The New Centurion's" starring Stacy Keech and George C. Scott. That movie changed my life.

    Yes it is a stressful job, made worse in NY when you have Mayor DeBlasio, at a nationally televised candidate debate, talking about how he had to tell his half-Negro son, that his biggest risk in life is being pulled over, and shot by a policeman, due to racism.

    Warm and fuzzy feeling for an officer in Hew Yak. The mayor hates them and makes no secret about it. RIP Officer whatever deemed reason that prompted you to do it.

    It is sad and ironic that mental disorders afflict both sides, the wackos get murderous, the cops get suicidal.

    Would you still feel sorry for him if he kicked your door in at 2am on some bogus gun charge because someone don't like you or the things you say?

    One of my uncles served in the Philadelphia pd...

    Joined the USMC at 17 (retired after putting in his 20) - joined the Philly pd at 37 (retired after putting in his 20) joined the Philadelphia fire dept auxiliary water rescue team "the boats" at 57 (retired after putting in his 20)

    At 77 he joined the civil air patrol and just finished his 3rd year...

    He has the marine pension and the fire dept pension and the police person and social security coming in and gets a salary from the civil air patrol (I don't think he can put his 20 years in) - he is a widow and collects his wife's disability social security - he gets free Heath care...

    My father served in the military police - honor graduate of his class and was awarded a soldiers medal his first year on duty...

    I remember hearing them talk - when my uncle was a senior detective he had a uhaul box in the trunk of his car that had a service pistol cleaning kit in it along with some supplies and a half empty pint bottle of Jamison's...

    That if an officer commuted suicide with his handgun they would set the scene with the cleaning equipment and other supplies and arrange to have it called an accident while cleaning his gun so the wife and kids were better of financially and a Catholic burial could take place - and to protect the kids...

    We recently had a case in Bristol PA were an older senior fireman upset over a pending divorce had combined pills and booze and passed I'm his sleep. There was a major rohm and Haas complex fire and his buddies found him dead but still warm - no rigor had set in...

    They dressed him in his bunker gear and drove him to the scene -sat him up in an on scene command vehicle - told everybody he had a heart attack or stroke and drove him to the emergency room...

    My uncles in the police department and fire department and priesthood and the navy all have similar tales to tell.

    It happens...catch 22 they seek help and they'll likely lose their job(maybe not a union job, but in other parts of the country) which will just contribute to their depression.

    Is there information that he killed himself out of remorse for raiding someone who didn't deserve it?

    You can only do so much. If he met with the shrink, got some therapy and presents as no longer wanting hurt himself what else can they do? Take his firearm rights? end his career? He's a cop, he already has a career's experience knowing what to say and what not to say to get off the hook. I appreciate his sister's passion, but it think it's misplaced. Suicide, like abortion is a personal decision, it's what he chose and it's not likely anyone was going to stop him, perhaps delay it, but not stop it. Just my two cents.
