A crowd outside a Philadelphia home taunted police as they battled an AK-47 wielding gunman accused of shooting six of their officers and holding another two hostage on Wednesday.
The man finally surrendered after a dramatic standoff that lasted nearly eight hours.
'A major moment of disappointment this evening was watching a crowd of people taunt police officers, laughing and yelling at them in the midst of the gunfire,' tweeted CBS3 reporter Alexandria Hoff early Thursday morning.
The man was taken into custody by a SWAT team who shot tear gas into the home, a police source, Eric Gripp, also said this morning.
The gunman who was identified by media as Maurice Hill, 36, was taken into custody after he walked out of the home with his hands in the air. Police have not confirmed the suspect's identity and charges have not been announced.
According to CBS 3, Hill, who has a lengthy history of gun convictions, was not injured during the standoff. Hill's lawyer Shaka Johnson said the suspect called him around 8.30pm.
'Maurice called me in a panic, obviously. He did not want this to end violently and he really was sort of taking an opportunity to speak his peace. I told him "You gotta surrender, man,"' Johnson told the news station.
Authorities said the shooting began around 4.30pm as officers went to a home in a north Philadelphia neighborhood to serve a narcotics warrant in an operation 'that went awry almost immediately', Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross said.
Ross said many officers 'had to escape through windows and doors to get (away) from a barrage of bullets'.
'It's nothing short of a miracle that we don't have multiple officers killed today,' Ross said.
The six officers who were struck by gunfire have been released from hospitals, Gripp said. Two other officers who were trapped inside the house for about five hours after the shooting broke out were freed by a SWAT team shortly after 9.30pm.
About 30 minutes later, three people that officers had taken into custody in the house before the shooting started were also safely evacuated.

Another quick news story about assault rifles in a shooting spree.Had one just this week about a Ghost assault rifle killing a law enforcement trooper.It won't leave the public eye as all the copy cats go for publicity. You can bet on having all firearms transfers being mandatory for any kind of transactions.
And that will be just the beginning of an avalanche of new gun laws being proposed by The Federal, State, counties and municipal authorities, you better get ready for serious problems to handle, trade, storing or shooting any kind of firearm in the near future. You're talking about the California Highway patrolman. Just another example how gun laws do nothing to stop crime, as he was violating any number of State and Federal laws being in possession of that rifle just like the Phillie criminal. What they want to say is if they confiscated all guns from the country none of this would ever happen. They know it's a political killer for them so they rattle on about this nonsense of "common sense" gun control...knowing it does nothing to stop any criminal with a gun. In fact our current guns laws likely contributed to the CHP officers death. The moment the guy realized that the CHPO was going to tow his truck, he knew his illegal rifle would be discovered, and he decided he wasn't going back to prison.
