Irrigation entertainment
Yesterday afternoon late, while irrigating a pasture, I was up checking the waters progress.
I was walking down a field dike to a spot that the horses and mules had tromped a trail through so water was leaking into the next land. So I had my shovel to just shore up the leak, as I was nearly finished, I kept getting what I thought were knats or no seeums on my neck and in my hair and was just brushing them away.
A couple started on my neck and nearly into my ears, I mashed them forethwith.
Whoa, almost immediately I started getting bit on my arms and neck, now I had my normal summer field attire, jeans and wrangler shirt with sleeves cut off and as I brought my arm down to my side from the mashing, it had multiple red ants on it and the were all biting in near unison. I looked down and my pants must've had a couple hundred headed up. I commenced brushing and beating them off and at the same time rid my shirt of the ones biting me above the waist.
I drove 4 wheeler back to the house mashing more on the way, had my Bride come out on the deck and took my shirt off to have her help rid me of these viscous little vermin.
Never gotten into a swarm of ants like this before, guess they had water on both sides of the dike and no where to go except up my pants leg.
The Bride and I got a good laugh out of it, I ended up bit several dozen times, from neck to belt line, but what got me was there was no biting until I mashed the first ones on my neck and then they all started biting no matter where they were and continued until I'd rid my self of all of them
What's their communication mode, telepathic Ultra high frequency ???????
Anyway, thought you fellas might get a good chuckle at my expense, and I'm no worse for the wear from it this morning.

yepper..see how fast the ants (tiny up to the big red ones) work in unison to fix their entrance mound if it is damaged..shame we cant have a govt focus on fixing issues with as rapid a response 0 -
Red Ants will turn you into a Clogger faster than mixing up the Hemroid and the Ben Gay Cream .:) 0 -
What you get for stealing all them guns from me Dave...
Glad all is better0 -
Ants communicate through odors. That's how they follow a path: one finds food and lays down a scent trail n the way back to the mound, then thay all follow that trail to the food.
In your case, all was well until you smashed one or more, which released a chemical that says "We're under attack!" to them. And so the counterattack began. The more you squished, the more danger chemical got released.0
