Brown Bread

Yesterday was the first time I've ever heard of Brown Bread in a can. Any of you guys ever tried it? From what I read it's been around for a long time in the New England area. They eat it with baked beans or cut a slice, heat it up and put cream cheese on it.

It's supposed to have a shelf life of a couple of years so that would make it a good item to have in your emergency supply.

Any who rather than trying to find it in a local store, which I doubt it would be in a store here in the South, I ordered a couple of cans of the the B&M Brown Bread from Amazon. Supposed to be here tomorrow. Stay tuned for the taste test.

    Nope. You open both ends of the can and push it out and then cut it into slices.

    I had some years ago. It's dense, moist, and with an obvious molasses flavor. Not good for sandwiches because it's crumbly, but a thick slice with cream cheese is delightful - and filling. You can also cover a slice of it with canned peaches or apples as a dessert.

    One of my favorites. Slice it about an inch thick, fry it with a little bit of butter, then top it with real maple syrup.

    Been eating it for years up here in New York State on the Vermont border. Also another local favorite is Grandma Brown's Baked Beans, and Habitant Pea soup...another local treat is cheese curd.

    The other old time brown bread is "date nut" bread. It comes is a square loaf wrapped in cellophane. Another hard to come by, but also great with a smear of cream cheese.
