Battery Ventilation

Hi, I want to use a standard 12v car battery to power my gate opener. I'm considering burying it in a box to prevent it from being stolen, but realize it would probably need to be vented. It's located in a field of 30' scrub pines. Any thoughts on how to discretely vent it?

  Use a gel cell or active glass mat (AGM) battery. They are factory sealed and no need to vent.

  Unfortunately I already have an extra standard battery. BUT, I might have to go with your suggestion,

  Is the gate or the fence steel tubing? If so weld a tube to the battery box and run a hose/pipe to the fence below the dirt line to hide the exhaust. Or hide the box under a hollow rock "spare key hider" style.

  You will be venting hydrogen gas, so make sure there is plenty of air movement. Hydrogen trapped in a confined space along with some air is NOT a good idea.

  My fifth wheel Rv, like most Rv's has a sealed plastic box for the battery. It has a hose attached to the top to vent the gases outside the rv. You only need a small tube as a vent. 12v Car batteries only gas a lot when FAST charged, You don't need much venting for your solar? recharging.
  Put the outlet grill under a rock to hide it.

  I won't even use the hose. Glue the white flange directly to the box top, screw on grid plate, just above ground level. back fill dirt over box, cover with a big rock.
