When did cops become such big weenies where dogs are concerned??? Not to mention such poor shots?? I can only assume that the ever so basic concept of "Do not pull the trigger if you don't know what is behind your target" was not observed. Why would a police department turn loose armed officers who are afraid of dogs and lack the most basic shooting knowledge????

Doesn't a cop have to interact with dogs numerous times every day??? Wouldn't it make sense to have mandatory courses on how to handle dog problems with out pulling your weapon???

Maybe we need to go back to Andy's method of handling Barney. Empty gun in holster, one round in shirt pocket!

So much for the"wellness check"! Geez, even postal workers don't have this much of an issue with dogs and they don't usually carry a gun.

Not there, so I can not comment towards the situation.

I will say a "40# Lab mix," does not sound life threatening.

I will say, If you shoot my dog, you'd better shoot me too. (Sounds like the Officer took care of that problem though.)

Murder charges should follow. If it had been any of us that took that shot, we be up shit creek. 40 pound dog???? Are you kidding me??? Hell Baltimore has rats bigger than that.

On the bright side she won't be needing a wellness check any longer.

Well I "barked at him," that is worthy of a Death Sentence, right?

Will he/she be able to procure charges? Doubtful.

I know of one who 'bout pooped his pants in 1989. To his credit though, he didn't draw his weapon when confronted with a startled full grown Irish Wolfhound.

I'd prefer to wait for the investigation before we lynch the police officer. There's still a chance that half of any news report is not true.

Don't they have spray cans? That's all we letter carriers had (plus the satchel). The meter readers all carried umbrellas. The police spray is FAR more effective & has a greater range than the Postal spray. If he had a spray can, taser or a nightstick I should think he is in DEEP doo-doo.

No argument here...officer apparently didn't consider what was behind the dog, her backstop or other options such as pepper spray. Officers should be provided some training on dealing with animals, it's not something I recall ever being touched on, perhaps because people used common sense back when I went through basic LE training.

True, her welfare was determined definitively.

I meet/encounter dogs nearly every day I work. Big dogs, little dogs, friendly dogs, aggressive dogs and only a few times have I felt truly threatened.
In one case, the dog's owner actually encouraged the dog to attack at which time I informed the owner that I was allowed to shoot the dog for my safety--that ended the problem.
Another case, I did strike an aggressive dog with a note taker/clipboard breaking the clipboard.
In the last most serious confrontation, I struck the large Lab cross with my cane as it pursued it's attack while I was backing away.
I wasn't injured in any of these scenarios nor were the dogs seriously injured.

A quick google search will find bodycam video of the shooting. Draw your own conclusion and report back to us.

Maybe it's because I am used to working with large animals but a single 40lb dog is no threat. None. A kick to it's chest will take all the fight out of one.
The cop KNEW where the lady was and and still shot directly at her. Negligence, not an accident.
