Woods Gun
I carry a gun in the woods at all times. I like a large bore revolver but a nice 1911 is fine too. For me I think the 44 mag is about my favorite caliber and I like a 4" barrel.
My goto woods gun is a mongrel 629. I got a 626-1 with a 6" barrel. Some idiot had shot a squib load in it and then fired a round or 44 spl, this bulged the barrel. I got it for a song.
I got a barrel from a 44 MTN revolver slim 4" and put it on. I had the action slicked up by clarks, the barrel was re-crowned and had an 11 deg forcing cone.
I probably could have just gone and got a 629 Mtn Revolver but they were scarce at the time.
Its a really nice shooting and carrying gun.
But I like a SA Ruger SBH too. I want to replace the one Ricci sold because I miss it
I have a 5.5" Red Hawk but its kind of heavy.................
Ken started me one the SBH again I have had about 6 or 7 of them all I have modified.
What is your favorite Woods gun??
BTW I think a 10mm Glock would be a fantastic woods gun if you wanted a self loader. I am not set up for 10mm and don't want to get into them. I have g32 in 357 sig that would do well here in NC and most anywhere else.

Been carrying Smith Model 69 a lot lately most of the time loaded with hot 44 special loads from Buffalo Bore and another favorite is my Uberti SA 44-40 again loads with buffalo bores warm loads.
If I decide to take a semi Auto most of the time is my Smith 10060 -
Those Ubertis's are nice guns and a 44-40 has been in the woods a long time 0 -
I've got Bulldog .44 Special I bought in the mid-seventies. I carry it as a mercy gun when hunting. I've seen rifle bullets and magnum pistol do weird things after passing through game laying on the ground. Always made me nervous, a 240 grain lead bullet tends to not pass through. 0 -
In the tradition of a woods gun or stalking gun...
I have a Uberti baby rolling block carbine in .357 magnum that carry's with ease - is light and has a fine balance...
The last time I harvested game was with this carbine on private ranch land in Texas...
My friend had purchased land planted groves of nut trees (walnuts and acorns and pecan and chestnut and American butternut) along with apple and choke cherry that had been neglected and not worked or maintained for about 15 years...
His plan was to clean the acreage up and maintain the tree groves - and using open land for grazing small lots of live stock and some horses...
Also to improve and maintain some ponds and streams and a marshy area to attract migrating ducks and other water fowl - and the state would stock the water with fish...
The family had done impressive work over a two year period and had to deal with some problems - one being the pig bomb or boar apocalypse.
The wild boars would breed like crazy and they tore up the fruit and nut tree root systems and devastated the grasses and other ground cover - it was like a plague from the Bible or some cheap horror movie...
I got to take a small wild boar (90 lbs approx) - as a small group was passing between groves of trees - some turned towards us and advanced - I hit it in the the sweet spot above and behind the front legs - a lung shot at about 50 yds...
He spun around in a circle and just dropped - collapsed on the spot.
Probably not the best caliber or platform for boar but it worked okay.
If I get the opportunity to go back I will take my Marlin 336 in .35 rem or my VZ52 semiautomatic carbine in 7.62X45 to help better eradicate their pesky pig pests.
I think that for a handgun woods gun / back up carry piece I would take my Great Western SAA revolver clone in .401 herters power mag (7 5/8" bbl - stag grips)
I imagine that it would do the job if needed in most scenarios - and I do have both a .45 colt and .357 atomic great western SAA with 4 5/8" bbls that would do a good job as well...
Out of the brace of the 3 great westerns I think the .401 herters power may with the longer bbl probably is the best pick of the trio - though I prefer the balance and feel of the shorter length revolvers...

I think a 10mm would be better than a .357 for a woods gun. slimmer than a revolver, higher capacity (or you can load only 5 if you want) and a 220 grain hardcast would do some things a .357 can't do. IMO
if you don't want to get into 10mm and want something else besides .44MAG, there's always .45 Super.

I'd like to get a S&W 1917 for a walking around the woods with one of those leather flappy holsters. I like it that they take half moon clips that lay better in the pocket than the full moon clips. I figure when I take a tumble no big loss. 0 -

You answered your own question.
As you can see from my sig, I am a 10mm fan and collector. When in the woods, I always carry one of my Glock's (G29, G20, G40 MOS). A friend of mine used to hunt feral hogs a lot and had a few close calls. I talked him into carrying my G20 at least while hunting on the ground. More than once he has had to rely on it to take care of a charging pig. Let's just say after about the 3rd one, he now also has a G20.
I think the Glocks are somewhat ugly guns but they are functional and the power to weight to capacity ratio of their 10mm's is about the best I have found. When I went to AK, I also carried my G20, but I'd maybe consider one of the .44 or .45 magnum level calibers if hunting the largest bears, though I am not fond of wheel guns at all.0 -
My Dad and I used to go to AK or ID to fly fish every year. We always carried. I had my Frankenstein 629 Mtn Rev. My Dad was recoil sensitive especially with a hand gun. His goto was a S&W 4" 66.
Then I let him try a 657 4" 41mag with some handloads. He really like it but he said it still "Kicked" too much.

I once owned a Freedom Arms 454 Casull, and thought very seriously about buying a LAR Grizzly 45 Win Mag, based upon a great experience when I fired one belonging to a friend. 0 -

I think a 44 mag loaded with a nice KT 250gr hard cast bullet with about 19grs of 2400 is a smooth shooting, handle just about everything load.
I even like 240gr swagged lead bullets with a case full of Trail boss.0 -

Bought on of the newer Ruger 1911's in 10mm and really like it. However, a stout 45 Colt is hard to beat too.... 0 -
Nothing really dangerous in my neck of the woods ie no big bears etc Feel just fine with my ruger security six in 357 mag . Depending on time of year the first couple of shot might be shot shells for mr no shoulders and his friend . Backed up by some hard cast handloads . When feeling nostalgic it will be a uberti 1973 cattleman in 45 colt . 0 -

My interests have always been in traditional primitive black powder stuff, mostly single shot. I have done all of my hunting with flintlock rifles and do carry a 45 caliber flintlock pistol for a quick que de gras if ever needed.
I actually recently picked up a High Standard Double 9 22 cal. revolver and have really enjoyed plinking with it! Pretty sure that little piece has created a "gateway" into a much wider realm of future acquisitions!

an interesting do for the uberti baby rolling block clone in 357 is reload with 180gr spirepoint at SAMMI max and see how much flatter and farther it shoots...got one and a Pedersoli Mississippi classic in 357....one can do some fun reloads with a single shot 0 -

That sounds like a nice set up. I like the Bisley frame, the 44 SBH I had I put a SS Bisley frame, trigger and hammer on it, it had a 4 5/8" barrel.0 -
Maybe a .50 cal Bowen single action army revolver clone - a sheriffs model in flat stainless with heavily textured stag grip panels...
Birdheads grip and no snag Williams fiber optic fire sights - black hardware with hi vis bright yellow optic tubes...
Recessed target crown medium weight bbl with Magna porting...
A cross draw full body wide strap embossed leather holster / bandolier rig with 12 ammo loops...

I believe my (new to me) Ruger SBH in .44mag or .44 Special, will take care of about anything I encounter.
Very comfortable with it. My .44 Confederate Navy Colt holster, fits it perfectly.0
