way back late 1800's was a painter of the American west ..fabulous landscape scenes of the mountains...remembered a trip to the Nelson Art Gallery in the 1970's....went into this huge ornate imposing building in Kansas City, Mo. with relatives to see a showing of impressionate art...did not get off on this much till i came to a big wall in one room covered by a one humongous painting of a Rocky Mountain landscape...i was stunned..after rooms of wishy washy impressionist stuff here was a WHOLE wall covered with this one lifelike western scene one could just walk right into and get lost...time just stopped for me and the tour group went on and i just stood there and soaked it all in ...sometime later i found my way back to the entrance area to join those who finished the tour and we went somewhere for supper.....that experience just floored me....years later i found a picture/poster store in town west wichita, bought a Bierstadt mountain print about 3' square and had it framed as a gift to a marketing advisor who made me a tidy sum that year ..he luved it

    I LOVE his work. The museum at Cody, Wyoming has several of his paintings and they are just beautiful.

    If western art is your thing the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, OK should not be missed. They have some works by Bierstadt also. Remington and Russel are not to be missed. There are others also.

    for years thought about a hobby shop built on to the house maybe 20x30 ??? with one end wall a seamless mural of one of his mountain paintings....ah dreams here on the prairie???.....years ago an everything shop dealer had a book with all his work about the size of a road atlas...and she let me borrow that for a week so i could drool over his paintings....tried to buy it but not for sale ...like to find one of those big books now...

    Second this, it is a GREAT little museum. Lots of fine native American art as well. I visit about every other year when I go to the Tulsa Arms Show.
