Pulled the Trigger, So to Speak - Ruger Super Blackhawk.
Have been keeping my eyes and ears out for a nice Ruger .44mag, since I lost out on the one Sam06 was selling a few months back. 
I am a big fan of Rifle/Pistol combos sharing the same ammunition. I have a Ruger semi-auto .44mag Carbine. So it stands to reason that I need the accompanying handgun. Right? :roll:
Listened to all my messages on the phone when I got off work this afternoon. (2:30) My good friend/buddy gave me a heads up, when he went in to pick up his special order Ruger Super Blackhawk in .45Colt with a .45acp conversion cylinder, he spotted this sweet/pristine Ruger Super Blackhawk in .44mag that just came in.
Stopped off on the way home in order to check it out. Yes, very nice 7 1/2" barrel. Looked new. Wanted $550. Offered $525. "Uh No." (This place never wiggles.) I hate that. :evil: "Original box" (you never get that with Kasey.) [ ] and plastic case.
Decided to pop on it. Put $300 cash on it this evening, will stop back in Thurs. (They roll up the sidewalks in Mtn. City on Wed. :?: (Most everything closes. Always been like that.)
Anyway, I am psyched to get my hands on it to run a few rounds through the hand cannon.

The one I sold was super nice. 4 5/8 Inch with a spring kit and a SS bisley grip, trigger and hammer along with a belt Mtn cylinder pin.
I even had a nice holster to go with it.

I am glad you got one but I am not a fan of the 7.5" guns, they are just so fricking big. I had a 7.5" gun and had a gunsmith cut it down to 5". It was an older 3 screw gun that was non converted. I hope you reload because 44 mag ammo is crazy expensive and to really ring out the potential of the 44 mag you just about have to handload. I would say 44 mag is my most favorite cartridge. It used to be the 41 mag and I still like 41's but the 44 is really fun to shoot and so accurate.
5 things I do with all my Rugers:
1. I replace all the springs in them with a Wolff Spring kit.
2. I replace the Cylinder Pin with a Belt Mountain Cylinder pin
3. I replace the ejector housing with a steel one and put some locktight on the screw.
4. I remover the trigger, heat it up and carefully straighten it out.
5. If its a Blackhawk I replace the grip with a SB dragoon style steel grip. I cannot stand the small aluminum grip especially with the 41's.
Ask Ricci all the Ruger SA revolvers he sold were all like that and they all felt really good in the hand and had excellent triggers. I think he sold 4 of mine, I know I only have one left, a Pre-warning 41 mag 4 5/8" gun with a steel grip that was my very 1st revolver. My Dad bought it for me when I was 14 at the Hardware store. He had to order it. That gun also got me into reloading and casting lead bullets.

I too prefer the aesthetics and handling of the 5 1/2" barrels. I figured the increased velocity, accuracy and oomph offered by the extra barrel length would be a valid trade off. (Remains to be seen.)
I remember yours as being very nice. I was in it until the very end. Raised my max once, ( maybe twice.) Wish I could remember what it went for. I'm in better shape $$ wise, now that both of my vehicles are paid for. (Extra $750/mo. to play with.) I would have definately popped on it, if offered today.

If you decide to cut it down have the gunsmith put a Redhawk front sight on it so you can change out the front sights. Get a target crown and have the forcing cone cut to 11 degrees.
If you really want it to shoot get all the chamber mouths trued.
I did this to my 41 and S&W 44 with a 4" I have now and man does it make them shoot good, way better than factory.
If you decide to straighten the trigger, be careful they are cast so they don't like being bent(I have broken a few). I use map gas to heat them, then chuck them in a vise and use a crescent wrench to tweak them just a little.
The belt mountain cylinder pins are worth the money. They really get the slop out of the cylinder and make the gun shoot much better.
For general plinking and messing around these are good bullets at a decent price if you don't cast your own.

I have this mold and this is what I used for hunting with my 44 mag. I hunted deer and elk almost exclusively with handguns and my S&W Classic 6.5" was my goto gun. Ricci sold it for me because I don't hunt anymore.

A few other things
- Don't shoot cast bullets in your Ruger Auto Carbine
- If you are going to shoot cast bullets in the Ruger Super BH make sure you get all the copper out of the barrel, you can do that with Shooters Choice or sweets 7.62.
- Use a lyman manual for working up the loads
For powders I really like AA#7 or AA#9 It meters great in my 550B low flash, its clean burning and seems to have a good consistency can to can. Of course 2400, H110 and W-296 are the old stand bys.
2400 would be next favorite powder because you can light load it where H110 is pedal to the metal all the way
If you are going to shoot Jacketed bullets in your Pistol and Carbine I recommend: The Hornady XTP in either 240 or 300. See which shoot good in your guns.
One thing I will tell you is the Pistol Carbine this is cool but I have not had luck with ammo that shot well in both. I have several 44 mag revolvers and a 44 Mag Lever gun. If something shoots good in the rifle it usually doesn't shoot all that great in the rifle. The other problem is the rifle doesn't shoot really heavy boolets that well.

Thanks for chiming in. I am hoping that the 7 1/2" will split the difference. I will say that aesthetically the 5 1/2" really draws me in. I am not planing on being a quick draw artist, so I went with the 7 1/2".0 -

I'm of the same opinion when it comes to barrel length. The last standard Blackhawk I had was a 4 5/8" .45 Colt, and for whatever reason, it almost seemed too short. Nothing wrong with it, it just never felt 100% right in the hand. 5 1/2" or 7 1/2" just seem to balance better for me, even if only that minor bit of extra length. Have fun. 8-)0 -

Just came back from paying the balance, and picking it up.
Yeah, ammunition is somewhat (cough, cough.) pricy.
Looked at about 8-9 offerings, .44Special/.44mag. Brought home a box of Fiocchi .44 Special SJHP, 200gr. for $36. (Most/all in the $35-$45 range.)
I have a few boxes of full house Magtech 240gr. .44mag SJSP (flat nose) for my .44mag Ruger Carbine. (It was $35 when purchased a year or two ago.)
May run a few rounds through it here shortly. It is definately a hand full, of metal/wood. I am thus far liking my purchase. Happy to have the accompanying handgun to my rifle. (One of my idiosyncratic quirks.)

As an aside, I am NOT a fan of Rugers tendency to print their entire safety manual (enough of it anyway.) On the barrel/receiver of their firearms. Not necessary. It is obtrusive and unwarranted.0 -
If you want to really have fun you need to reload. Even on a single stage press you can crank out 100 rounds in an hour if you prep the brass after you shoot it(De prime, clean and resize).
I cannot imagine paying $35 a box for ammo :oops:

Yeah Sam06, I definately need to get in to reloading, with as many firearms (pre-boating accident) that I have in various calibers. It would be prudent.
I have Almost, pulled the trigger multiple times. I will at some point. (I am easing in to it.)

I have owned several SBHs over the years. With reloads, I could hit a quarter at 25 yards with one. My favorite was the 10" model. If you can get your hands on one of these, you will find they shoot almost as good or better than many 44 Mag rifles. 0 -
Found a couple really good deals (on first glance) for ammunition. The best was Fiocchi 240 gr. SJFP at $23.95/50. (.43 cents per round.) Was looking to buy two boxes. Estimated shipping charges $20.
