Lacquer thinner is my go to, using 0000 steel wool to scrub with. The poly finish will come off with acetone and steel wool. The Klean Strip Charlie posted the link too, is good stuff, and they make it in a spray can too. Word of warning though, don't get it on your skin!

"Don't get it on your skin"

That's exactly the endorsement I was looking for - ;)

All the above works and any paint or finish remover will do the trick. Follow the directions, as noted some of the chemicals can be rough.

Light wet or dry sandpaper going with the grain works. Go easy around the edges to not change dimensions where wood will meet metal when reassembling.

    Have fun.

The best stripper I have used is Zip Strip, it is used for stripping furniture. Mostly methanol I believe, and it will burn your bare hand. It has never seemed to hurt the wood over the years I used it.
