Ford F-150 tows 1 Million Pounds plus from dead start

    Yeah that's what I was wondering. 10 train cars going down a grade is not that easy to stop. Anybody that's ever towed anything heavy or tried to pull a stuck vehicle out of a ditch with a pick-up truck knows that video is a bunch of BS.

    The guy that tows 18 wheelers with his beard is more impressive. :roll:

    The reason they picked rail cars is because of the slack in the couplings all they had to do is get the first car moving first to get momentum going

    Did they try it with a (fill in your choice) for comparison? Many years ago, I pulled 100,000# a quarter mile up a 15-20% slope on a gravel road from a dead start using a 2 ton truck powered by a little 350 Chevy V-8. No big deal and nothing to brag about.
    Honestly, I saw a guy pull a duck out f a locked briefcase on a magic show a couple days ago. Visual illusion is marvelous but doesn't prove anything.

    A fully loaded rail car weighs ~280,000 lbs. The rail/wheel interface causes a coefficient of friction of .001

    The Rolling Resistance of a fully loaded railcar (these were empty) is 280lbs.

    42 x 280lbs = 11,760 lbs. (again, this would be for fully loaded rail cars, not empty ones).

    Consequently, something less than 11,760 lbs of pulling force (worst case) would be required to move all (42) of those rail cars.

    SOooooo...they weren't pulling "1 million" pounds, but rather something less than 12,000 pounds.

    And yeah...that "1.25 million" pound tow strap should be a dead giveaway. I've got a strap 2x that big in my truck which we use with the tractors.

    ETA - Oh, and Smitty500mag is exactly right...once you got a few of those cars moving the momentum alone would move the rest, so the actual towing force is probably way less than the 11,760 lb. number (from above)

    Remember the commercials showing a pickup pulling an airplane (747??)

    really impressive until you start calculating the gear ratios, transfer case reduction, etc. then it becomes a simple process.

    But still impressive :lol:

    if that's really 12,000 pounds, you could get 100 guys that pull 120 pounds each and say "look we pulled a million pounds!"

    make a nice response to the commercial...

    It's all hyped up ADVERTISING designed to fool the dumbed down public into buying a product most any other pickup can do under the same circumstances.
