While riding against the British on June 18 1815 this 23-year-old soldier caught a cannonball to the chest. The armored breastplate he wore called a cuirass would turn back a sword, knife, and even a pistol bullet. A cannonball is a force unlike any of those. Interestingly enough, family legend says it was not Fran?ois-Antoine Fauveau who died that day in battle. He is said to have been replaced by his brother as he was about to get married.
The grim battle-damaged cuirass survived to modern day to show us just how brutal combat was back then, as it also is today."
