Help With Description, Value, French "Velo Dog" .22

It was made by Manufacture d'Armes de Saint-?tienne, .22 Short caliber.

I find a lot of similarly styled revolvers made in Belgium, very few made in France, and none identical to this one.

Is it rare? Is it valuable? How old is it? I know it is over 50 years old, but is in an antique?

    I saw a number of Velo Dog pistols in various arms stores in Germany, France, Belgium, but that was back in the 80s. All were dirt
    cheap and could be had for less than $10. Did not ever think of trying to bring one back when there were Lugers, HKs & CZs around.

    Locals told me they were the European equivalent of our pocket derringers, popular for the time, and made in the same era. Velo Dogs were mainly made in France, but Belgium's and Dutch made them too. Brits had their Bull Dogs.

    Velo translates to bicycle and Dog means canine. These pistol were supposedly made to shoot dogs while riding a bike which was a common means of transportation in Europe back then.

    St Etienne was a huge arsenal in France and made well over a million French weapons over the years. About all the help I can offer

    Yeah, that's about all I have been able to find out. Thanks.

    Lots of Belgian guns out there, a few French, but none like this one. It's in really nice shape and it's engraved.

    That is a exact copy of the "puppy" made by Henrion,Dassy,& Heuschen in Liege.
    On those old guns, how the grips are shaped on the top by the hammer is a clue about who, what, where.
    HDH offerd them with almost the same engraving.

    While not too common, I don't think you'll get a lot for it.

    When I collected those old pocket guns, Rarely paid more than $150 for any of them.
    This was only 5 years ago. Not a big bunch of collectors for basically what was the RG/Hi-point/Raven/Locin guns of their time.

    All the "puppy" revolvers by the company I can find hold 16 rounds in the cylinder.

    Can you provide a link to the one you referenced?

    PAGE 150 GUN #1081.
    Zhuk even groups those types of guns in their own chapter because there was so much copying and small changes amonst the makers and countries.
    Yes most of the puppy's held 6 shots.
    But remember back when that gun was made, there were no production runs of thousands of the same gun. Makers changed things every day.
    I group those oldies by type of lock up, grip shape, hammer shape.
    Even caliber and barrel shape {round vs. octagon, vs hexagon} seem to change within the same guns. :shock:
