Heart about dropped yesterday -
Went to let my Buddy out yesterday afternoon. (He was quietly standing by the door, like he does.)
Got lazy, (he has been so good, for such a long time.) Loosely had a hand on his collar when we stepped out. (Usually have a firm grip, because I know he is strong, and sees things [wildlife] he wants to go after.)
He apparently spotted a deer or a rabbit, as soon as we stepped out the front door. Tore off (out of my grip) and into the woods. Before I could clip his collar to the cable trolley lead. My heart sank.
I had PJ bottoms on, a T shirt and no shoes. (And) It was raining. Called him several times, knew he was after whatever he had spotted. No Joy.
Went back inside, put some slip on mocs on real quick, grabbed the Jeep keys, and shot out of the driveway. The woods he had plowed into is about 2-3 acres, with my property on one side, the smallish country holler road on the other, my back driveway on the 3rd. Feeling sick.
Drove around calling his name for about 10 minutes. Drove down the road for a couple miles, just in case he was running out toward the highway. 5 mi. away. Nothing. Whipped a U, headed back towards the house and that section of woods. Noticed a couple dogs looking a certain direction. (My big fear was that he would jump on a neighbors dog, and get shot.)
Keyed in on that area. Windows down, calling his name. He came bursting out of the woods, headed towards the Jeep. His favorite thing is to go for a ride. I know that, that is why I was in the Jeep, as well as covering more ground.
I did not get mad at him. Just got him into the Jeep, (he jumped right in,) another U turn - headed toward the house. Had his leash. Got back into the driveway, hooked him up, and headed back to the house. He was acting like a teenager who knew he had broke curfew. Giving me that look.
Did not get mad at him. Was just extremely glad I got my Bud/best friend back. I was afraid he would get lost, and not be able to find his way home. (Or jump a neighbors pet and get shot.)
Probably catch grief for posting this, but wanted to share my story and relief.
First time he has got loose and split. I am very careful with him. Got lazy/complacent. Paid the price.
Super relieved. Would have broke my heart.

Thank you for not beating me up Sir.0 -
My dog does not run free. I am trying to be/am being a responsible owner of the Breed.
I respect him and his capabilities.
I could not fault another homeowner, if my Bud jumped a pet in someones yard. (And) Got shot. There are multiple small yappy dogs, (dachsunds etc.) In the four or five neighbors closest to me, as well as some large free roaming dogs. I believe I am the only one that keeps my dog contained/restricted.
I have respect for others property/boundaries.0 -
Ken you may want to try training him with a shock collar. I used to think they were inhumane but I have changed my tune with these new ones. The ones I have emit a sound that warns the dog they are going to get shocked. The learn fast and after a few months I don't even need it. I blow my dog whistle and they STOP and look at me. I had one dog that was a hard head and he took a little longer than the other but now they mind very well. 0 -

While I respect your opinion Sam, My dog gets so fixated on a fleeing deer and/or rabbit, whatever - I believe he would run right through it.
I need to invest in a nice chain link 5' fence. I've had athletic dogs who would jump/climb a fence. So I am somewhat leery. This dog is Super Athletic/muscular.0 -
My German Shepherd was well trained she never left me by more than 15 yards. Never showed no interest in cars or trucks.
If i was in my shop she would lay under a tree by the shop.
When my Grandkids would come she would chase them around the yard and never go in the road.
One day the grandkids were leaving and my granddaughter asked me to strap her in her car seat and about 15 four wheelers came down the road and someone ran over her and broke her neck.
I think she ran in the road because my back was turned to the four wheelers and she was protecting me.
When Sacha died i was holding her in my arms crying like a baby.
I tried to get them to admit who ran into her but they would not say. They knew a fight was coming. Stupidly i beat my car up for a few minuets.
My wife made the comment about what i would do if someone hurt one of my family if i did that for a dog.
That dog was my best friend. She never was more than 10 yards from me ever except that 1 time.
Be careful because it only takes a second for a mistake and you lose your best friend. Im glad things worked out.0 -
Thank You Dave.
I am Very grateful. I would have devestated, had my dog disappeared.
My best Friend.0 -

I could do that, yes Joe.
It has not been necessary.
I just got lazy, weak hand on the leash.0 -
Glad to hear you got them back, and that he didn't hurt anybody or anybody's animal. 0
