Auto maintenance

I buy a new truck or my wife's car maybe every 10 years (150,000mi.+-) I'm kind of a maintenance person! Synthetic oil, flush cooling system every 35,000 mi. along with fuel filter change, trans & diff. fluid change every 50,000 mi., air filter as needed, always have breaks and fluid levels checked & kinda if it's needs it do it! Bah-Bah-Bah. When it's time to get rid of them there are normally no problems. I always keep the maintance records which I believe help in the sale. I'm I over doing it or what?

    I think its great you do it as I take care of our vehicles like I am keeping them fore ever ( well some it seems like I do ) as far as value I would say that's debatable I have never trade in a car and any one ask about its history same with buying one never ask
    a coworker I had ( a engineer ) never did crap drive them for ever and trade them in on new one never changed the oil or had any thing done .
    said it never made a difference to the dealers ..
    on a personal note I like to trust what I or the family will be driving to be safe and reliable .

    Yes, IMO. Especially with today's advanced fluids and filters. This is not the oil, antifreeze, oil/fuel/air filters of 30 years ago.

    Absolutely not. As much as vehicles cost today??. Having my oil changed tomorrow morning. She may be a 05 Cavalier but she gets the best of everything. Mobile One Extended and their best oil filter every 7000 most of which are road miles. It?s 30 miles from my house to my office mostly on US 40 so she gets good and warm every day.

    No... I believe you need to change everything at the manufacturers suggested intervals or sooner. I error on the safe side and do it at about 80% of what they suggest

    Here's two that most people never do, when was the last time you changed your power steering or brake fluid?

    Especially your brake fluid, most manufacturers recommend every 45000 miles or 3 years. I have a pen that tells me when the brake fluid has gone bad that I paid probably 10 bucks for.

    Not only does keeping up with maintenance make it easier to sell a car, and makes it easier for you to get premium prices out of it because people know that it has been taken care of very well and are willing to pay more for it then they would a car just like it. but you never know when you may have to keep the car double what you are now because of financial reasons. And believe me if the Liberals have their way, unless you're a multi-millionaire now, you'll probably need to keep your car at least two to three longer than what you are now... socialism is not a good thing for the Working Man that wants nice things.

    Nor are the manufacturers recommended service intervals... they have factored in the fact that things don't have to be changed as often as they were 30 years ago because of the advancement of fluids and filters... so IMO, you're wrong with that statement. Stay with the manufactured recommended service intervals... just my two cents

    I keep my vehicles up pretty much the same way you do.About once a week the 2 we drive most gets pulled into my shop and everything gets checked,even belt tension and tire pressure.Vehicles cost a lot to replace and I don't understand not keeping them up.My 99 Nissan pick up I bought new is about to turn 500,000 miles and still runs fine.I probably need to replace the tires,not because of wear,but they are 10 years old.

    Tires on your '99 pickup for 10 years and it has 500,000 miles on it?

    99-2019=20yrs. 500k miles divided by 20yrs =25k a yr. Tires on for 10 yrs =250k on the tires.

    Yes, but 250 kilomiles on tires is still at least three times what tires usually get.

    Yokohama tires.The Nissan was retired from being a work truck at about 400,000 miles a few years ago.That was when the majority of miles were accumulated.I had a set of Uniroyal tires that ran 109,000 miles.The tires on it now may have more miles than that on them.

    Oil change and of course filter is the number one item for preventive maintenence. Since combustion leakage pollutes the oils with carbon and other corrosive substansas. Failure to change Oil and filter will kill a engine over time.

    Agree that new tables for scheduled maintance consider modern advantages in auto technologies. The synthetic lube intervals seem a little long to this old schooler.

    If you trade out regular who cares dealer won't give you extra, if you keep it better maintain it
