Attended my 1st Cowboy Action Match Yesterday
With the Southern Missouri Rangers.

About 15 men, women, and children there of all ages. Shot on 5 different stages. Was a good time, targets were close and nearly impossible to miss. 1st time out I wasn't concerned with the clock abut shot every stage clean.
Found I was "quick" using my pair of Uberti 1873 revolvers and Rossi 92 lever action (using 38 special in all 3). I was slow manipulating my "new" Winchester 97 shotgun. Need to work the action harder to eject spent shells plus watch some videos on using it for cowboy action. I test fired it out front of the house before heading to the shoot. It works!
Good welcoming group of people. Was kind of fun seeing little old ladies (guessing - 60's through 80's) blasting away with the full complement of guns. I also met 2 High Road Forum members there - J-BAR and Fingers McGee. Both were shooting black powder.
I stuck with smokeless, being my 1st time out. Will get some BP guns out there soon.

Cowboy action is something I?ve been itching to try. Looks like tons of fun and the folks involved seem pretty interesting too. 0 -
I shot a few matches years ago and it was really fun. Then later on it became a comedy shooting match where they started doing some silly stuff like ridding stick horses or repeating something stupid before they shot with men wearing women's bonnets and aprons etc. That's where I drew the line and said adios not for me. 0 -

Like any fad that peaks in popularity and then crashes, cowboy action shooting has pretty much gone the way of the white buffalo. 0 -
I?ll offer my perspective on this-
I?ve talked to and RO?d lots of first timers be it USPSA, Steel, or IDPA.
People are intimidated by the idea of shooting a ?match? when they?ve never done it before.
So much so- that it probably actually hurts the sport. If people were shooting like the average Joe golfs on Saturday- we would be much healthier.
They think they will be surrounded by pro shooters and everyone else will have more expensive gear, know all the rules, and all the intricacies of ?winning?. And they will be out of place, and they think a match is not a place for learning. When those thoughts couldn?t be further from the truth.
A good squad and good R.O. Will take the extra time to make sure a new shooter is welcome, comfortable & has fun.
I think Drobs had fun and he?s got me shopping for some single action guns!

I had two gentlemen showing me the ropes and explaining in detail the rules to me for loading, handling guns at the line, and clearing. Both said the local matches are more about fun than competition.
One gent - made the point that no cash prizes or guns are given to the winners of these shoots, even at the state / national level. All Guns given away are raffled off. So there is really no need to get overly competitive with this type of shooting. Quoting a member of another forum I'm on:
"Cowboy Action Shooting (CAS) has gotten away from small targets out there, as played by SASS clubs nowadays. The emphasis is on hitting the target, hearing the 'ding' and going home happy that one hit the targets. Socializing with a bunch of like-minded friends is also a big part of it!"
Note we started at about 930am, shot 5 different stages, and were done by 2pm. Seems the games (order which targets must be shot and where the starting point is) come from a set book.
Afterwards we had a potluck lunch and beer was available.
One of the fella's invited me to join Arkansas group which is a little closer to my house. I'll shoot with them in July.
Things I need:
1. Gun Cart - the club loaned me 1.
2. Leather lever wrap on my Rossi 92. Banged my knuckles a couple times running it fast.
3. Shotgun shell belt or slide.
4. Shotgun reloading press.
5. Cartridge loading strip or box to carry rounds to the loading table.

I concur.
Side note, my buddy let me try his short stroked Winchester 1873 with black powder 44-40 + his Browing SXS 12 gauage w/ BP shells. The Winchester is significantly smoother and faster to shoot than my Rossi 92. I'm going to have to get one... Will probably stick with 357 / 38 though.
The SXS 12 gauge with BP shells had absolutely no recoil at all.
Costume wise, the fella that invited me to shoot said - jeans, long sleeve shirt, cowboy hat, and lace up leather shoes are acceptable. No tennis shoes or ball caps.
