dude at work was saying he wanted some big tall floor speakers for his home stereo. he commented that most people (his age anyway) don't use big floor speakers (with a woofer in each), don't usually have a home stereo (might have a "home theater" setup) and most of the time they are listening to earbuds from their phone.
ha. if he would have been around in the days of the dinosaurs he would have been over-awed.
anyways, I don't currently have a home stereo system, just the computer speakers and a mini subwoofer. I was going through some old pictures and came across the old stereo from 20-25 years ago.
Kenwood KR-V9010 receiver
Sansui AU-G77XII amplifier
Harman-Kardon tape deck
Aiwa tape deck
Rockford Fosgate 8" truck speakers w/ top-firing tweeters
Rockford Fosgate 12" subs
the Kenwood was 50 watts per channel driving the truck speakers, and the Sansui was 110 watts per channel @ 8 ohms slave-amped to the Kenwood and driving the subs, which were 4 ohms in the ported box with dual 120 Hz cutoffs.
I used the HK tape deck for recording and the Aiwa for playback.
used the Video input to connect the computer's Line Out to play CD's and MP3's.
it was in a stereo cabinet with glass doors. didn't have anything to put in the turntable shelf except for the remote control.
it was L-O-U-D and had mega B-A-S-S and sounded G-O-O-D

There is a difference in loud and clarity. Years and Years ago had a Phase Linear Amp, Tuner, Bose 901's , Sony turntable. Now just a Sony system hooked up to the satellite tv. 0 -

I've had a few banging systems over the years, (my best was a high end Yamaha system purchased a component at a time, while in the Army.) but nothing like my Brother bought back the day.

My Dad co-signed a $6k loan, thought my Brother was going to be buying a new car to replace his beater.
I was mowing the huge, 6-7 acre yard, (my turn that weekend) on top of the mountain. I see my Brother driveing back up our driveway, in his beater headed towards the house, boxes hanging out the windows.
Had gone to Mr. Toads in Johnson City, TN. (The place, back in the day.) My Dad was flipping. "It's all going back." Well you can not return Electronics. :shock:
Bang and Ollefson turntable, Nakamichi Tape deck, Kenwood receiver, (sorry, drawing a blank [currently] on his amp.) Teac reel to reel, Denon, etc. etc. 6 Magna-planer speakers. (About 6' tall. About 2" thick.) Had a wood frame with various size guitar type strings covered in a fabric sheild. Sound vibrated/eminated into a 360 degree radius.
That system would make the earth/ground vibrate.
Unbelievable.
I still laugh, thinking about it.
I bought a couple of his speakers, that I have had in my various cars over the years. (Including my 69' Hot rodded Karmahn Gia. ADS (Analog Digital Systems.) I still have them. I want to mount them in to my current Nissan Versa Commuter.
I've turned down his repeated offers to buy them back, over the years. Nope. Hahahaha.0 -

Had a stack system once with huge speakers but ditched it decades ago.
These days, the "music (sic) some call music" sucks to the max...mostly screeching/yelling and instrument noise makers.
I haven't listened to a radio in decades and don't buy any recorded junk...or go to 'concerts' with the same noise.
As an added advantage, I can just turn off my hearing aids and relish the rapture of the quiet.0 -

Mine Sony system is probably 10-12 years old now. 1000 watts, a decent sub, and can make pictures on the wall dance nicely. Pretty sure the neighbors know I'm home every time Saving Private Ryan or Band of Brothers get tossed in the DVD player. :oops: 0 -

you can buy reel-to-reel tape decks but where can you get fresh recordings? recording off a turntable limits tape quality to the source, so you might as well just play it right off the record. I suppose what I'm saying is if you can't get pre-recorded reel-to-reel tapes what's the point in having one?0 -

maybe, just a guess, they took that into account when they made that song and said hell with it and went outside some boundaries of what would be acceptable (or useable) for music that was to be mastered for consumer use later on. in other words they said our speakers can handle it, hell with it! let's do it
if that's true, you could rig up speaker cabinets using stuff from bass cabs, guitar cabs, etc or hefty studio monitors and corresponding amps (Marshall, Laney, GK etc) it should be able to handle it. if that's how it is.0 -

saw a pair of bookshelf-size studio monitors at Guitar Center, sounded very good. never heard of that brand so I asked and the keyboard/PA tech said they were "very good". don't know if there's better and I didn't get to hear somebody wringing them out so all I can say is they aren't low end speakers. 0 -

Children of the Sun and Red Barchetta were always my go to test songs. Hells Bells if there was any question.
Current setup is an older Yamaha 7.2 amp 95 watts into each of 7 JBL satellites and twin 300 watt subs. I really like the channel tuning on the Yamaha. put the microphone in your listening position and let the software run. It adjusts all 9 channels to the specs you set. Don't like it? tweak it and run it again... It is pre 4k so I will have to update it at some point, but as these eyes get older I think 4k will be fine....0 -

Let me first just say that I know what high end audio is all about. It's impressive what it can reproduce.
That said, I just bought a 15" sub made by Pyle for $38 bucks. Folks I can not believe how well this thing performs. Sometimes you get lucky I guess.
After all my kids move out, I'm upgrading my home stereo system to include some Paradigms I have been eyeing for years (probably settle for their Prestige series at this point). Right now I have a quality Yamaha head unit and some inexpensive Onkyo 5.1 that no one would ever write about and does a total disservice to the head unit, but that get the job done for bringing audio to the ear.0
