ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? New York state may soon allow immigrants who entered the U.S. illegally to get driver's licenses.

The measure passed the state Assembly last week and could get a vote in the Democrat-led state Senate as early as Monday afternoon.

Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo supports the bill, though he expressed concerns Monday about U.S. immigration officials seizing license information to target immigrants for deportation.

Supporters include the Business Council of New York State, the state's largest business organization, as well as immigrant advocates who say immigrants need licenses to work and provide for their families.

Republican lawmakers, however, say approving the measure could lead to voter fraud and say people shouldn't be rewarded for violating immigration rules.

Twelve states already authorize licenses for immigrants who entered the country illegally.

    ?!?!?!????WTFBBQ????? I can lose my driver's licence from speeding tickets, and NOT be allowed to drive, but Pedro comes into the country illegally, would/should/could be deported if anybody finds him, and they GIVE him a driver's license so he can drive?

    think of all the help we could give veterans....all the roads and bridges we could fix....how many fewer dead and maimed at their hands, etc, etc, etc,
    if we SIMPLY TURNED THEM AWAY FROM OUR BORDERS..and spent the billions of $$$$$ saved only on AMERICANS

    I believe there is "real id" and different pictogram on the license. Since I don't fly nor go in to "federal" buildings I got the not "real id". I figure if they want me in a federal building they can come and cuff my ass to get me in there. I'm kind a waiting for a cop to ask me where I was born. Then I get to say "I was born in East L.A." but I think the joke would be wasted on the millennial cop. Then again I believe it's illegal for them to ask me? I do fall under "OTM" (Other Than Mexican) so who knows?

    bet no requiremnet to buy insurance is written in (ins companies do not want that pay out burden) and wonder if they get special property tax rates
