Iran downs US Unmanned Aerial Vehicle
So here is the story.
Our bird flying over international waters.
Unfortunately Iran views and claims those waters as their own.
So according to Iran- its a US spy plane in Iranian territory. According to the US it is in international waters/airspace.
Next - we know based on where it is flying it has the capability to see what we want it to see. There is no value in putting it up if it can?t collect intelligence.
Next we know, for certain the Iranians can see it and have provisions to attack it if they so choose.
Next we know the US undoubtedly has the capability to intercept any SAM Iran would choose to put up against US controlled international waters/airspace.
So long story short - this is how we instigate wars to start.
Contest the geography and who controls it -check
Put something in that space with the capability to compromise your opponents defenses-check
Even though adequate countermeasures exist and are ready- allow the opponent the opportunity to strike first -check
Iran now has 2.5 strikes at minimum.
Strike 3 will result in a few carrier battle groups rearranging the landscape.
I don?t t see the upside.

nah it was just a drone. I bet that happens more often than we know about.
another 1/2 strike against them, they announced that this week they are going to exceed their 10 kg (or whatever) limit on Uranium they agreed to in the nuclear arms deal. that should lead to trouble later on.0 -

Dude, I think you are reading into this a little to much. More than likely the guy in the trailer/box in the hangar deck of the ship did not realize that the drone had been targeted, and if he did was not prepared/equiped to properly evade. The iranians see an unmanned vehicle and realize that shooting down a drone will cost the us millions, hurt our national pride, but with no loss of life or attack on us soil, we really cant call it an act of war or retaliate. Win for them, loss for us, except for any potential informational gains we got about the weapon system they used.0 -

Dude, I think you are reading into this a little to much. The drones was designed to fly over others air space. No if's, and's, or but's.
It may have been targeted while over Iran but hit when it flew out of their air space.
Right now it's a game of chess, and we just lost a pawn. The next moves will determine
How the game progresses.
If the Iranians do build up on weapons grade nuclear materiel, we should just "lend"

Their direct grudge against us goes back to the peanut man. He put the skids under the Shah but they have no gratitude for that. Their anger was directed against our letting the Shah into the U.S. for medical treatment. Even before that the religious fanatics were upset with our support of the Shah going back many years.
Just one more example of our getting rid of a "bad man" only to have someone worse take his place.0 -

The Cold War was starting in earnest and Iranian oil and it's location were key to US interests. CIA backed money put the Shah back into power, and in return he provided bases in which the US cold fly ELINT and spy missions into the Soviet Union. While never publicly admitted, several air to air engagements with Russian aircraft happened at the Russian borders. Meanwhile, the USAF and Red Air Force went at for real over Korea.0 -
