Technology is leaving me in the dark

A recent announcement regarding C-Spire to began installing "fiber optic" in our county has totally made me realize how far out of sync I am with new technology.

RG59 cabling replaced by RG6. Cat 5 ethernet cable being replaced by Cat 6. (My house has nothing but RG59 and Cat 5). Wi-fi 6 with faster wi-fi speeds will require me to replace my router.

Just cannot keep up with the changes in technology.

    that's only the fastest and the bestest. like, 10 times faster.

    you don't have to replace your stuff if you are satisfied with the speed.

    Well, if I do end up with C-spire, it's speed is 1GB. Far more than my router is capable. I have 10Mbs which is the fastest that is available in my area. Plus C-spire uses Cat 6 ethernet cabling and RG6 for HDTV.

    10 Mbps uses CAT3
    100 Mbps uses CAT5
    1000 Mbps uses CAT6 (1 Gb, or "gigabit ethernet")

    10 Mbps is the slowest. your router and CAT3 or CAT5 cabing will work the same as it always has, 10 Mbps. it won't stop working.

    this day and age 100 Mbps and Cat5 are the exception not the norm. gigabit ethernet is everywhere, and cheap. it might be a pain in the ass to update the CAT5 cabling in your house but with a new router the speed will only be limited by the CAT5 cable, 100 Mbps.

    or you can get a 100 Mbps router for about free. nobody wants them when the new ones they buy are all gigabit ethernet.

    Do you know why all that speed is needed? Faster to download and snoop on your computer. :ugeek:
