Slugs most likely, Snail bait will do the trick, most any farm store sells it. Buy it by the big bags and sow it like grass seed. Some use beer but beer is made for drinking so I have been told.
If it some sort of insect use a product called Wisdom. DRT and pretty much harmless to man and beast.

Before you broadcast insecticides all over your yard, go out at night with a your trusty (tacticool) Surefire and see what is doing the munching. Then you can make a more informed choice of product. Beer in pie pans is surprisingly effective on snails and slugs, they go for it to the exclusion of all else, and you can wipe them out in a few nights, without toxins around your casa.

Slug and Snail pellets right near the base of the plant. Refresh the pellets every couple of weeks. Some years we get them really bad, I go out late at night with Rose shears and cut them half. We get these suckers, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_slug
They get up to 3 or more inches long.

You must not have any Deer around because a Hosta does not last the night where I live.

Depends on the deer. Most year our Hosta are safe and the daylillies are the salad bar. Everynow and then its the other way round.

Ditto for us.We have a few that the deer stay away from but the ones on the perimeter of the yard are just Salad for the local deer population.

This sounds like the most delicious method to me.
