Choking on water just cost me 800 bucks!

I choked on a mouth full of water Fri nite, thinking all I got wet was my shirt and pants. Well, I was wrong. I closed my Macbook cover never thinking of the keyboard. The next morning it was a DRT keyboard, only about 1/2 of it worked. I dried it out with a fan for three days and it is still dead. I am posting on my new 800 buck Macbook now. Hard to believe a spray of water was worth 800 bucks.

I plan on seeing if the other one can be fixed, I can use it for a backup for FOREFLIGHT in my plane. Triple redundancy is not overkill when flying.

    Hefty gallon zipper bags. With the zipper cut off. Folded so app. 1/2, is under the key board. (The weight of the key board, keeps it in place). Has worked for me. Use to buy the form fitted plastic covers, that were specific for a certain keyboard. Waste of money. Hefty, gallon zipper bags, work just as good.

    easy to replace the keyboard if you're not a klutz. I've done it a few times in 1/2 hour. (laptop repair techs charge $130/hr last time I checked! heh)

    they only have silicon contacts in there and no circuitry. if something did get fried it would be on the motherboard and there would be a whole lot more not working than just a few keys. it's difficult to dry out water in there, I think if you let it sit a few more days or 2 weeks it will start working again. it's just water.

    Yep, but make sure you keep it unplugged and turned off with no battery, so it doesn't fry it if it hasn't been fried

    Semi-related... It annoys me greatly when I start choking and coughing because I swallowed wrong. You'd think in my late 40's I would have learned out to properly swallow my own saliva by now. :lol: :x

    Almost as annoying is the wife unit asking me if I m OK and to put my arms up anytime I do that, lol I guess that is better than ignoring me though.

    Rice - dry white rice - sealed in a ziploc bag with the laptop....

    Just might help - better if done right away - not certain how effective it would be days later once contact corrosion sets in and things degrade...

    I won't set a glass or water or ANY container of liquid on my desktop, no matter how from from the laptop. I'd read way too many of these accidents over the past many years.

    Had a car with a cup holder and a tray. Finished a call and put the cell phone in a cup of coffee. Unfixable, but before smartphones so more of an aggravation that I could do something do dumb.

    Something to try: I used to have problems with moisture condensing in my hearing aids and shorting them out. Got out the hair blow dryer and held the aid in my palm while warming it up, not getting it so hot that it was uncomfortable to hold. Worked every time. You could try the same trick with the keyboard, heating the underside. What's there to lose?

    Well call me lucky. When I McPop a laptop, I just walk out the shop and grab another and transfer the hard drive. I have a stack of Macbook Pro's that came from a school, all work just fine! If you do try to dry out your mac, make sure to stand it on edge so the water can drain.

    I have an older intel macbook for parts if you need a keyboard. 2006 or so 13". The processor went out, so even if yours is not just the keyboard, you might still fix it. Cost you shipping is all.
