If a person got out 5 trading days ago they lost 5% on the Dow Industrial Average.

My guess it will be even more, when the market closes this coming Monday.

Bankrupt? Like British Petroleum? (BP) Paying dividends of 5.5 % + Maybe Microsoft, I'm sure they're awash in debt.

    I think you think right.

When I was preparing to retire, 15-20 years ago I started converting my investments into more secure schemes. By the time I retired 11 years ago i had solidified everything but my real estate holdings. Which I'm still holding....
Most of my friends (of my age group) held their original investments and to this day are still trying to recover their losses.

So your thinking is 100% correct for retirement, IMO, and also, IMO, correct for today's world.
Even money in the bank is not safe. Considering the low interest paid I prefer to have it where I can put my hands on it.

When you read the data in the financial information for almost any well known name American stock they are all broke, floating on debt.
I discount goodwill instantly a place marker that shouldn't be on the asset side without an outside audit in my opinion, that along with inflated property and plant numbers without these props 90% of American companies will never survive the next downturn without Government intervention AGAIN another failure of supposed Capitalism bailing out the wealthy to protect the status quo.

Been a good ride I think time to go cash 100%
    Yep, however:
Capitalism is NOT about government bailing out the wealthy.

News flash, capital is built on stocks bonds and real estate. Its all realated. Yes even precious commodities like gold silver and oil. If it all falls.

It all goes down together in value.

What remains is whats real. Land, gold silver bullets etc. However actual values are negotialble. What good will your fiat cash do you when it all falls down?

MSFT is as a FEW others cash flush to some extent, not like they used to be, BP IS paying a large dividend don't count on it if we hit a recession they have plenty of debt too. MSFT carries 77 billion in dent compared to 27 billion in 2015

Further net tangible assets are valued not at fire sale pricing

BP won't b e able to hold that dividend in a dowturn

Well, we know that Comcast had AT LEAST $60 billion cash in the bank, as that was what they offered for the Fox network. Disney had even more, as they paid $71.3 billion cash for Fox. Both companies must have a lot more than that.

The companies in the US that actually build thing should do as well.

The oil and gas industry has been in a recent "downturn" since 2010. Crude oil prices are roughly HALF of what they were in 2008 ?

BP is a prime contributor to U.K. pension plans and is widely help worldwide but especially important to the British.

BP price / dividend charts for last 30 years. https://www.macrotrends.net/stocks/charts/BP/bp/dividend-yield-history

Microsoft has 130 Billion in cash. Would have been Much more if they would NOT have had Ballmer involved with Microsoft. He almost single handedly kept Microsoft from making the best decisions. Plus he didn't move fast enough, in the right directionl
