Here's an interesting side bar. After the Japanese decimated our fleet in Pearl Harbor Dec 7, 1941, they could have sent their troop ships and carriers directly to California to finish what they started. The prediction from our Chief of Staff was we would not be able to stop a massive invasion until they reached the Mississippi River. Remember, we had a 2 million man army and war ships in other localities, so why did they not invade?
After the war, the remaining Japanese generals and admirals were asked that question. Their answer....they know that almost every home had guns and the Americans knew how to use them.

Don't forgot the hunters from the South. They proved that when invaded they readily marched off to war barefoot and unarmed!
Talk about resolve.
But,
Lets talk about the bigger issue here.
Our government waved a red flag in the face of the bull!
They not only allowed but encouraged, Japan to attack our back door. American servicemen were sacrificed to enrage the citizens and get them motivated in the war effort.
And it worked!
But were the deaths of nearly 2400 brave souls justified?0 -
It probably won't matter how many guns there are if a country like China or Russia invades. They can detonate a bunch of neutron bombs that would kill everything living in the cities but it wouldn't damage the building. 0 -

Ohio has a LOT of hunters that never get a hunting license or buy tags. As land owners we are not required to have them. We do tag in turkey and deer online but a license is not needed if you own or rent the land as your primary residence. 0 -

The whole thing smells like fake news.
*We still had a fleet along with a whole lot of submarines. Three carriers in the Atlantic, three in the Pacific.
*Our army, though small, was far from nonexistent. The Army Air Corps could fortify the islands the Japanese had not yet captured and make it difficult to send troops and supplies.
*Most people lived in cities and the shooting sports had been declining for years. Whatever the case is today, there just weren't so many hunters back then. The woods had been badly overhunted by previous generations and in some cases clear cut for lumber or farm land. There's more huntable land today than there was back then.
*What would hunters do without training and supplies, faced with tanks and artillery and aircraft? They couldn't just be drilled to march in formation. Successfully training and supervising a mid 20th century army would be much more complicated than a mid 19th century army.
*Japan was at war with China, Australia, and Great Britain. They could not put their entire war effort into an invasion of the US.
*The biggest reason it's a little silly is the fact that you'd destroy the economy in order to create a marginally effective fighting force. Instead, why not hold the enemy back as much as possible with what army there was, and put all the workers to work making war goods instead of marching west to resist an invasion with hunting rifles? Why not keep the farmers farming so we didn't all starve? Why not train the men you did send to fight? It took them several months to take the Philippines despite the scarcity of US supplies; by the time they took half of California, the first new soldiers would be getting out of training.0 -
My Dad was a kid in Rural Mississippi during WW2. He had 2 brothers and several cousins fighting but he wasn't old enough.
He told me that his Dad had a 44 spl revolver, 2 16ga SxS Shotguns a 22 rifle and a 30-30. During the war you couldn't get ammo so they didn't shoot anything but the 22. The rest of the guns and ammo were kept to "Fight the Germans" if they invaded the US.
I said Dad ya'll really thought they would invade and he told me that until 1944 or so they really did. His dad, my Grandpa, worked for the Postal service on mail trains and carried his 44 everywhere.0 -

Ok, I'll agree that I underestimated the range of a purpose built EMP device, however, consider the source of your article. Essentially a guy who sells EMP shielding. I wonder if there might be some bias there. Now, a geomagnetic storm is quite different. That's equivalent to a bomb much larger than any country in the world currently has in their arsenal. But, if we go with the largest nuclear yields currently available, detonated at optimal altitudes, then there would still have to be hundreds of such bombs to affect the entire country. Relying upon hunters (the majority of which are Fudds) is a bold move, and likely a huge mistake. Japan made a judgement call, and they erred on the side of caution. I doubt they or anyone else, who might be motivated would in the future. There is some crossover between hunters and the 3%, however so there is that. But I'd wager the number of hunters that would just lay down their weapons at the first sign of resistance would be embarrassingly high. 0 -

The movie "Red Dawn" was a example of what could happen. Some would lay down for the enenmy others would resist.
The key element is to honor the 2nd amendment. As long as the free men with the willingness to resist whatever power oppresses exist. There is hope.
