WWII items in the box
I was given a box of my Dads items when he passed back in 1978. I set the box aside and never opened it. Dad fought under Chester Nimitz in the Pacific fleet on aircraft carriers. I did know he brought back a K bar knife in the sheath that he had. Other items was a couple of plugs from some sort of the ships guns..two of those, a couple of mashed up ..looks like .50 cal bullets, a pair of small colt grips..maybe a .380 pocket pistol , a letter from 1952 sent to his Mother and Father, his dog tags, and most important.. a small blue bible issued to him when he completed training in the great lakes.

my grandfather was in WWI but before my dad was born all items he ( my grandparents ) had were lost in a house fire dad was too young to go to WWII .
a close friend of many years ago his dad was on a aircraft carrier in WWII and had albums of photos ( I was too young to remember much and too interested in girls to talk with his dad , now I realize it was my loss . I recall lot of battle shots and damage left to the ship by the kamikaze huge holes and fires on deck . I do remember 1 story of one crashing into there ship they had shot the plane to pieces the pilot what was left had a armor body suit on his torso was all was left of him I guess to give him a better change to carry out his destiny . sadly I lost track of my buddy many years ago I only hope him or his older brother kept and cherished the photo's he may have other items but I never ask .
I hold in fond memory of those WWII vets I did get to talk with over the years0 -
My dad was 82 nd Airbourne in WWII Never talked about his service except a little about Paris during / after the liberation . He was scheduled to jump during operation Market Garden but his plane had to abort during or shortly after takeoff due to engine failure . I knew that 6 or 7 of the other farmers in my area were also vets but by the time I got old enough to be interested in their stories it was too late 0 -
My dad was at the battle of the bulge. Never knew - he told my wife while I was overseas and she relayed it after...
All my uncles were in one branch or the other and served overseas during WWII. That?s just what you did...
I really wish I?d have say put down and talked to them about their service. I really blew the chance. So - if anyone out there still has someone who served, sit and talk! Get info! Man, they did some tough siht! Learn all you can while you can.0 -
My Dad was blind in his right eye, so didn't serve in WWII. He had a cousin who survived the Bataan death march, who hated the Japanese until the day he died. He refused to buy ANYTHING made in Japan. He had several expletives he used every time he talked about his experience. 0
