Shotgun or AR15 ??
I have a 10 mm glock within reach as I lay here in bed for emergencies in case there?s no time to access a long gun. I have four AR15?s here in the house, a Colt,a Daniels Defense, a LWRC all in 5.56 and a Colt 9 mm. These are all great guns but; I just prefer a shotgun here in the house or anywhere else where the target is within say 40 yards. My Mossberg 590 here in the bedroom or the Remington 870 Police Magnum in the den I don?t care which. Loaded with hot Federal 00 buck I have a lot of confidence in either gun to stop pretty much anything. I don?t have kids running around and if I did my choice would probably switch to a 55 gr hp 5.56 round for it?s lack of penetration but I can use anything I want and that?s probably always gonna be a pump gun with full power buckshot.

The Tueller drill is mostly a myth. My Navy uses pump shotguns for ?ship?s defense force? and ?repel boarders?, etc. and a lot of cops carry pumps in their cars, so I seriously doubt they are as useless as I think they are but I?ve never liked them.
I?ve always used auto-loaders since I reached a point in life that I could afford one, except on ships and for qualifications. When I was shooting the qualification course to be a corrections officer I was using a Remington 870 pump. For my second target I must have pulled the trigger at least twice before I remembered it was a pump. That was unacceptable performance on my part but I had time to recover so nobody noticed and I didn?t tell, but it reinforced my opinion of pump shotguns.
For home defense you will probably be facing one, maybe two or three junkies trying to get cash or trade items from you for their supplier and most likely willing to kill you to get it. However shooting an intruder is just the beginning. When you are thinking about shooting an intruder at 40 or more yards you are probably looking at some serious prison time.
If the corpse is torn up because you shot it at close range with a shotgun the judge might see that as normal behavior and a shotgun can do a lot of damage. If the corpse is torn up because you shot it fifteen or twenty times at 40 or more yards he is likely to think you shot him more for sport than ?fear for your life?.0 -

That's exactly why I keep my old Winchester Model 12s and Browning shotguns in the safe and a Winchester Model 1200 Riot Pump Shotgun by my bedside. It wouldn't be a great loss if that old police trade-in shotgun gets confiscated. It's mechanically sound and works very well but it's no collectors item.
The gun rode around in a cop car for many years but I doubt it was ever shot or if it was it wasn't shot very much. I bought it at Gulf States Distributors in Montgomery, AL for $125 back in 1999. The gun was in pretty good shape except for a big white ID number stenciled on the butt stock which came off fairly easy without ruining the finish with some careful applying of a little acetone, elbow grease and furniture polish.0 -
For me a Glock 30 with a light is my go to HD handgun. Next is a AR-15 (5.56) it is a CAR-15 clone and it has a light too. Last is a Remington 1100 12ga with an 7 shot tube loaded with Slugs.
I live in the country and no kids in the house.
If I have to "clear" my house an AR is easier to maneuver than a SG IMO. My Car-15 is short and light, it has Iron sights which are fine, nothing to fail nothing to turn on.0 -
I suspect that a very high percentage of those advocating a shotgun for defense have no first-hand experience using buck shot on a large living target. They will be very surprised that the results are nowhere near what Hollywood shows. 0 -
I've been shooting waterfowl, pheasants, partridge, rabbits, Pigeons , and the like, with a shotgun since I was 5-6 years old. A pump shotgun in my hands is second nature. Don't even have to think about it.
My choice is a scattergun, with old style goose loads. BB, or number 2 lead shot. Will drop a coyote at 80 yds.
Now, you may have been born with a rifle or pistol in your hand.
Use whatever you can use, point, shoot, without thinking about what you're doing.
What works for me, won't work for you, and vice versa.0 -

Did you ever see what 9 - .33 Caliber closely bunched lead shot will do to a piece of plywood from 10 feet away traveling at approx. 1,200 feet per second? You don't have to go to Hollywood to know what that'll do to a "large living target".0 -
I like the Ithaca Model 37 shotgun.
I have two in the shop and two in the house. Two of these are older M-37's, are Riot guns from a police department. with the 20 " Barrels.
Neat feature is you rack the slide and hold back the trigger, it keeps on going.
Using Law Enforcement 2 3/4" No 4 buck.
And yes, I keep an AR handy too.0
