Dang pond!

We have a 2 acre pond 30 ft from our deck. 25 years ago I appreciated it a lot more than I do now. Ducks, herons, geese, occasional eagle, plus all of the normal pond stuff like turtles, frogs, fish etc... I used to come home from work, grab a cold one and sit and watch what was going on with the pond. A few years ago the power company came thru and cut all of the mature ( 50 - 60 ft ) trees on the east side of the pond. Consequently it now gets a lot more sunlight and I get a lot more weeds and algae. Just came in from treating 1/2 the pond to kill some of the weeds. So thick you can't use a motor and rowing ain't much better. Took about 3 hours to get that 1/2 sprayed. Used up my leftover aquatic weed killer and just ordered $300 more online - talk about pouring money down the drain. Somebody this summer will say what a neat pond, wish we had one. I will get a funny look when I tell them I wish I could give you this one. Oh well, rant over. Time to grab a cold one and watch the weeds die :D Bob

    To many years of copper sulfate. Settles to the bottom and after a while kills all the beneficial bacteria. That creates a whole new set of problems. Bob

    I also have a 2 acre Mountain pond, at my backdoor.

    Actually, about 75' away, and since the ground slopes away sharply, my 2nd story (wraparound deck,) is about 4 stories above the pond.

    I really enjoy the Bullfrogs, Peepers and all, the other wildlife associated with it. It is Nirvana in the summer evenings.

    It is Spring fed, and has about 350 Brown and Rainbow Trout in it. A huge number of Bluegill.

    It is a Mountain Pond, with Mature trees all around it. We are 5-7 miles, deep in a Mountain Holler.

    No algae problems.

    Stock pond with catfish. They're an efficient algae eater and tends to avoid other fish.

    Best solution yet. (And) Catfish are excellent eating. Probably my favorite freshwater fish.

    Can't - Government won't allow it under the wetland guidelines. I think that's a crock, but like all land you don't really own it. You can build it but the government has the final say on what happens to it. I wonder what it would cost to fill in a pond that's about 4 million gals in size. Bob
