Tragedy 85 years ago yesterday at Indy
A racer from Knoxville, TN, Pete Kreis, was killed during practice for the 1934 Indy race on May 25, 1934. He's buried at Asbury Cemetery in Knoxville just a little ways from my Dad's grave. It also killed his mechanic.
When I was a kid, while visiting my great grandparents graves, I always went by to take a look at the unusual head stone with the outline of the race track showing his car going over the wall in the first turn at Indy. He was a local celebrity that became a world known racer.
