Memorial Day
On this Memorial Day, I remember my:
- 4th Great Grandfather Thomas, who was murdered and had his horse stolen during the Revolutionary War in Orangeburg, South Carolina.
- My distant cousin of Vicksburg, Mississippi, Thomas Lafayette, who was wounded while in the Army of Northern Virginia, hospitalized, captured near his home in Mississippi while on furlough, imprisoned at the Union POW Camp in Alton, Illinois, contracted smallpox, died, and is buried on Smallpox Island in the Mississippi River.
- My distant cousin George Washington, who was captured in Mississippi, shipped out of Alabama to a northern POW camp and was never heard from again.
- My distant cousin William, of Louisiana, who died in the War Between the States.
- My namesake James Franklin of Alto, Texas, U.S. Army Air Corps, who was shipped from Bataan to the Japanese POW camp, Bilibid Prison in Manila, where he died from Beri Beri at 10:50 AM on 30 August 1942 while in an extremely emaciated state. I attended his funeral in East Texas in 1948 when his remains were shipped home. It was my first military funeral.
Thomas Stonewall Jackson...and lots of my cousins who are mostly gone now that were named after him, Robert E. Lee, George Washington, and Francis "The Swamp Fox" Marion.
I think of all veterans, though their names are not known to me, who gave their all for their beliefs at home or abroad...it is their day. May their remains rest in peace.

I remember my Uncle Doyle, KIA at the Battle of the Bulge.
I also remember those that gave all during our 1972-73 deployment.
