    as a teenager i took a nine inch out of my ford fairlane to "tighten it up" a little. after studying on it for quite a while i have always been amazed on how they work. i always wanted to meet the guy who came up with that design.

    I always wondered what it was about differentials that was so complicated. The only shop around here that will work on one is 60 miles away.
    At 100,000 miles, I changed the differential fluids in my truck. Four quarts in front and four in back. $13 per quart of a special Motorcraft fluid.
    The fluid I took out looked as good as what I put in. I saved it for brush hog and other gearboxes.

    They're not really complicated, but most people take one look at all those gears, and get scared. So the shops that do the work play into this fear, and make people believe it's some kind of magic or voodoo that they perform. Setting one up is not hard, you just have to pay attention to detail, and be able to do some simple math. I have built dozens of differentials, and know a fella down the road that does what could be considered custom work. His latest project has been a set of narrowed disc brake Ford 9 inches fore and aft, for a Jeep.

    But to the OP, yes, cool and informative video. I found that several years ago, and had the wife watch it.

    Most people get frustrated with the steps involved and the repetitive nature of those steps because you almost never get it the first time. An experianced builder can lesson those steps just because they know often times where to start. I?ve assembled less than a dozen in my lifetime, mostly gearing changes and if I was to build one today I would have to start from the very beginning. They are very simple yes but that pinion depth can frustrate me in a hurry. Much easier with a Ford 9? because you can do it on the bench but the rest if done in the vehicle can frustrate a person into saying ?good enough!?

    ford electronic locking differential gives both rears posi till it hits a certian mph then disengage no sure i want it on the new truck i have been driveing 2wd all my life ?
