I fixed it good - loose fan shroud - Nissan Frontier

Was out exploring the other day. Stopped at a stop light and heard this horrible flapping rattling sound. Thought it was the car next to me till I pulled into a grocery store and heard it again. Partner told me that the last time it was at the dealer for an oil change that the service guy said the fan shroud was loose. Quoted $400 to fix it.

Today, I went out and started wiggling the fan shroud (located behind the radiator). Felt tight at the top and a little loose towards the sides. Figured maybe the bottom of it was loose. Maybe I can tighten it down. Took off the skid plate and found the lower portion of the fan shroud sitting in there completely disconnected - basically flapping in the wind. Yep that's loose alright.

    Keep an eye on your temperature gauge. That shroud performs a valuable function in keeping cool air flowing through the radiator.

    Hmm, guess I'll save that part. I do have some bailing wire.

    That's how I fix a broken fan shroud, I don't live in an area they get so hot but it's really needed unless I'm towing something. But then I just watched my temperature gauge anyway and pull over when it gets too hot

    That seems to have been to standard fix for a broken fan shroud since they started putting fan shrouds on vehicles

    Just keep an eye on the temperature gauge if you going to a extremely hot area, or you are Towing something with it

    But then you should be watching your gauges anyway whether you're towing something or not

    not to pee on your parade but you do know about the trans cooler problem in some of those nissans. google it, world of info. some people replace with an external cooler, i put a new aftermarket radiator in mine. check the color of your trans fluid.

    Yep - $4000 to replace the trans and radiator.

    Forget the bailing wire.........get a roll of Gorilla Tape !!

    Got it back in there but it's still loose. Just not completely off like it was.
    Part is discontinued but I think I found one on ebarf.

    I fixed a fan shroud for something,I cant remember what it was for,with sheet metal and pop rivets. I have a 1999 Frontier I bought new that is about to turn over 500,000 miles with the original engine and second transmission.The original transmission went 420,000 miles.
