$280 for a Bodyguard
I see the local outfitter has the S&W Bodyguard in .380 for $280. Looks like a decent price. I don't currently have a .380. Is this a good entry into that caliber?

Personally, I would opt for a Bersa Thunder .380. Excellent gun in every respect.
I saw a Cabelas add yesterday listing them for $278. (The Bodyguard, that is.)0 -
Kahr arms makes several interesting .380 acp variants designed as EDC platforms...
Taurus spectrum and Taurus curve are both different sides of the same .380 acp coin...
While not available at an entry level price point Glocks 42 has a capable and reliable .380 acp...
Colt mustang is the classic .380 acp choice that many prefer...
Kimber has the micro in .380 acp if you want a top echelon gem...
The Walther .380 acp with the modern EDC pocket pistol profile and architecture will surprise him...

The best of the lot in my humble opinion.
I own a Kahr Arms .45, I also own a Taurus 740 Slim. Both underestimated and unappreciated firearms. (Like the Bersa Thunder .380.) I consider all three, in the best buys for the $$ category. YVMD.0 -

I was always a fan of the Browning BDA myself. I know a couple guys that own the Bodyguard, but I have never fired, nor handled one myself. They seem to be happy enough with them though. 0 -

I have always wanted/lusted after a nice quality Browning BDA. Will have to own one, oneday.
Have a nice old vintage Browning catalog. That is the sidearm that spoke to me.
Have several (really nice) Browning Buckmarks. From the Browning Bull Barreled Micro, to an enhanced heavy barrel Target model with a Tru-Glo mounted optic.

My CZ model 24 and my CZ model 27 and my CZ model 28 are sadly no longer in production or I might steer folks their way as I think they make for a nice trio of vintage European EDC pocket pistols...
Like wise the the early Czech pistols showing the development of Franz Joseph NIckles innovative safety - like my CZ Model 1916/22 pistol is not going to show up on the shelf of your average gunshop...
Hard to recommend my German Jager pistole with its groundbreaking unique and innovative stamped sheet steel and nest fitted bilaterally symmetrical snap together design features since I rather doubt that even at well stocked gun shows or shops staff have ever even have are of one...
The frommer stop won't likely be available but the more modern standardized FEG SMC in .380 acp could be acquired and is a damn nice gun...
I do like my Desert Eagle MIcro .380 acp EDC semiautomatic pocket pistol - and have yet to see a desert eagle or IMI branded pistol that was not top notch and reliable - but I only have one box of 50 rounds .380 qcp full metal jacket through it and it's not only not broken in but I have yet to identify it's faults or idiosyncrasies...
Bersa makes fine guns and I have fired a thunder but have never owned a bersa.
And I know it's off topic but I think my IMI Jericho semiautomatic pistol chambered in .41 action express (desert eagle proprietary combat cartridge) is a superb EDC weapon.

My wife has the M&P .380 Bodyguard with laser. Been a great little gun and have had no problems with it. It?s easy to pocket carry in a pocket holster. S&W is selling gobs of Shield E-Z?s in .380 is probably the reason for the price drop on the Bodyguard. 0 -
I have a friend that took a 380 round in the belly.His vest stopped it,but he had a black bruise almost the size of a soccer ball.Gave me a new respect for a 380. 0 -

I own a CZ27. (Purchased New by my Dad in Berlin in 1949.) I do not carry it, as it is a .32acp.
.380, I've got no problem with, and would rely on. (And do.)0 -
My early EDC was a BG380. Loved it. With the DA I didn't need to use the manual safety. Nice, crisp little shooter.
The only thing I didn't like was that it's .380. Not to start _that_ argument, but I've migrated to 9 and carry a G43 now.0 -

I have one of those, it?s only good for maybe two shots then the mag drops causing the gun to jam. Mag release is too easy to bump when trying to shoot that tiny thing. 0 -
We sold a lot of the S&W BG380's and had no problems that I recall. I would not buy the laser equipped gun due to several that I personally have seen lock up due to the tiny screw that holds the laser module in place backing out. When this happens the gun is locked up. If you must have the laser be sure to check that screw periodically. 0 -

With all the discussion around OTHER .380 pistols, is my takeaway supposed to be "these are a better entry gun into the caliber, for the price"? I'm not sure I'm understanding the discussions here. 0 -

I guess that is a good price but I wouldn't want one.
If I was going to carry a 380 or I was limited to a 380, I think a Beretta 84 would be my choice. They are large for a 380 but they have 13 rounds in a proven package. A walther PPK/PP would be nice but they can be picky with ammo, I think for that style I would rather have a H&K 4 in 380.
All that said I would rather carry a good 38 spl revolver, Like a M38 than any 380.

Bought mine off my Brother, when we took about 6 Handguns to an indoor range in Richmond, VA. Was killing it, with this thing, against the back wall.0 -

Follow up shots for one. A smaller caliber handgun with a still lethal bullet rules in my humble opinion. Shot placement, shot placement, shot placement. (Rules.)
A miss by a .45, is less lethal than a properly placed .22.
I have quite a few handguns to choose from, by the way. (About 30.)

My EDC is a S&W 642 Airweight in .38 Special. (Thanks Ricci.)
I also carry a nine and a .40, on occasion.
Any of the three will get the job done. (Given proper placement.)
Is .380 my first choice,?
No.
Would I feel undergunned?
No.
Better than a sharp stick to the eye.0 -
