Created a monster
I love living in the country. Critters galore around here. Have always had bird feeders and hummingbird feeders and Judy and I love seeing all the different birds. Thought sunflower seeds would be our major expense, but I was wrong. A few years ago we had a pair of Baltimore orioles show up. Turns out they love Welches grape jelly. Last year I think it had grown to 3 pair. When the young ones start to fly the feeders got a little crowded and we went through about a case of jelly. This year we have at least 5 pair and are already going through the jelly pretty fast and that's without any chicks yet. Keeping an eye out for Welches sales. They don't like any other brand, just Welches. It's amazing that these small birds can migrate from Michigan to the gulf states and back and remember where the feeders are and keep checking until we put them out. Oh well I guess I needed to spend my SS increase on something. Bob

How did you feed the jelly?
I kept hearing a different call in the woods behind my house. It?s like he calls a question, then answers it. I was out in my yard a few days ago and heard the call in my maple tree. I saw an oriole, the first one I had seen around here since I was a kid.
He hung around a few days but seems to be gone now.
It odd the things I notice as I get older.0 -
we used to have almost two weeks of zillions monarch butterflies thru here twice a year..now only one or two at a time..SAD....our wrens are back and it is fun watching try to stuff a 6" straw thru a 1-1/4" hole....hummingbirds and eagles migrate thru our lake place in eastern kansas...not many h-birds come thru here 0 -
If you google oriole feeders you see several kinds. Some hold jelly and half an orange. We tried those but the birds never showed any interest in the orange. One that we have is a simple tray that is held to a window with a couple of suction cups. Fun to have the birds only a couple of feet away looking in the window at you while they eat. Another is a simple small jar about the size of a baby food container. Held sideways with a dowel attached for a perch. With a wire hook attached we hung it from a shepherds crook style pole out side another window. At peak feeding times we might have 3 or 4 sitting on the pole waiting for the one on the feeder eating to get done. Right now it sounds like the Canada geese and sandhill cranes are squabbling in our field the other side of the tree line around our yard. Noisy as heck but also kinda cool.
