Forged In Fire ?
Whenever they try and fix a knife blade with the welder why dont they grind a V in the metal and then fill it in and then grind and heat treat the knife.
All they do is put a bead on the top.

A gagzillion years ago, I was at the Sema show in Las Vegas. Watched a demo of a new tig welding machine.
The welder was welding double edge razor blades together on the sharp ends.
Not a blow thru or warp in sight.
Heat treating the knife is okay TILL you get to the weld....different metallurgy.3 -
I am an above average welder in stick and mig. I would give myself a B+ or A-.
However i interviewed a kid for a welding job and he could weld better than anyone i have ever seen. I was going to hire him on the spot but then he asked about getting off a few days whenever he was called in to work on nuclear power plants.
He said that he would be off about 4 or 5 days every 6 or 8 weeks depending on how much radiation he received while he was working.
I could not hire him because all we sold was billable hours to a company and if you are not there it makes the company lose money. So i could not hire him. He made enough to live on welding the power plants he just wanted health insurance.
I tried to talk my boss into making a job for him but he would not ask the company we worked for to open a job part time.0 -

years back in st louis machine shop, we had a power plant refurbishing job, similar to what dave speaks of, a crew of young TIG welders on standby 24/7 to repar and imperfection in the turbine diaphrams as needed. none were more than 26 years old, and were absolute artEEST with that TIG. we worked 37 days around the clock on that job.. straight time, time and a half, double time, even double time plus holiday. dav1965 wrote:I am an above average welder in stick and mig.
