Mike's BBQ/Food in the NE TN/W NC area -
Took the dog (Buddy) for a ride. His favorite thing. (Backflips ensued, as usual.)
As always, the several bikers there, were all over him with love/petting, once they figured out he was friendly.
Ordered via the phone, (The 10-12 cars/trucks/bikes in the lot were like WTH? ) a Deluxe BBQ Platter. 1/2 lb. Shaved Smoked Pork. (Old School sunken Smoking Pit,) adjacent to the Shop, chimney puffing away, always. Proprietary sauce covering it, (Vinegar based.) a bunch of fries, Cole Slaw (vinegar based,) Baked beans, a couple Buns, replacing the rolls it usually comes with. A side order $2.85 of Large fries. (About the size of half a basketball.)
About $14.50 overall. Killer eats for about 2-3 meals.
How about you Taco Bell eating mofo's.

Ten years ago (or so) we used to drive down your way to eat at ... IIRC...a buffet that had outstanding food.
One day I drove down just for dinner and they had closed. I can't remember their name or advertised specialties - prime rib, I think.
Back then we were looking for a place to retire and Mountain City was high on our list. Good location for hunting and fishing, tax advantage for retirees, close to relatives (but not too close), good shopping within easy driving distance, etc., etc.
All the public hunting land in the area disappeared between my visits, houses on the market were mysteriously on-hold by the time I drove down to take look. Then the best restaurant in the area folded!
A real estate agent explained that houses were being bought up by speculators anticipating the college boom over in Boone.
A call to the Game department explained that all the public hunting land was never actually TN Game land, it was merely private land leased by the game department and they lost their funding so the land reverted back to "Private - No Access". Mike's BBQ.
I have no idea what happened with the restaurant.
I haven't been back since, but its nice to hear about Mikes BBQ (for next time).0 -

When I lived up north , Every year my Parents would ask me, what I wanted for Christmas. Inevitably it would be Mike's BBQ.
A cooler full of about 2 lbs of shaved smoked Pork, about a pint of Mike's Vinegar based sauce, sent North. (I can score Cole Slaw and the accessories, on my own.)

I'm a Yankee - I know from fried clams but BBQ, not so much. Spicy hot for me is Guldens Brown mustard. And I'm stuck in California so the best I've had here is Gorilla BBQ in Pacifica. Owner weighs about 350 and has more guns than me. Went to a place in Holly Hills many years back - Sweatmans. Was really, really good. 0 -

Mikes is OK, Farmers not too bad, Ridgewood in Bluff city. None better and I have had BBQ from Montana to Manteo.

Brother it sounds like you are quite familiar with Mtn. City/come through frequently.
You need to communicate with me a day or two in advance, if possible. I would like to meet you, and buy us both a meal.
Mike's, beats the crap out of Farmers BBQ. IMHO.0 -
Might just do that, but no Taco Bell. I have not eaten Mikes BBQ in some time. BBQ sometimes varies with who's cooking that day.
Tried the KFC a few weeks ago, pretty good but greasy. WE like Suba's but a tad expensive and hate the reservation idea.
Shuk-e-do a time or 2, not many good places in the city. Sharpie's at the state line is hit or miss OK.
Travel to Mtn City in spells. Hit the Roan Valley auction often then drift into the big city. Kitchen at the auction is supposed to be one of the best and cleanest but hardly ever eat there.
Don't frequent Farmers, use to but the last time I was there had to wait for ever for the meal. Waitress took 4 other diners that came in after us, then I had to ask to be waited on. Ain't been back since. No I ain't that ugly and had recently had a bath and yes have all my teeth if you know what I mean. Grins.
If you like sea food venture around towards Abingdon on your way home from work and hit the Harbor house.
Did you make it through trail days in Damascus with out having to hold your nose? Some of the hikers don't know what soap and water are.

Might take a first date to Green's Seafood in Bristol, if she cares for that. Supposed to be the best around. ("Atmosphere not too great.") Probably not 1st date location, l might reserve that for a later date. Was going to take her to the Smoketree Lodge in NC, but apparently it reverted back to nothing but a Lodge. Too bad. Killer atmosphere, and really good food, back in the day. Grilled Trout, etc.
Will revert to whatever her favorite restaurant is. That is never a bad thing. I was hoping to show her a new, killer atmosphere/food place, over my way. Appears to be gone. Too bad. Huge trees growing in the2/3 story restaurant, lights throughout and everywhere, a Trout Stream running through it. Etc. Killer atmosphere/food.
This girl is really sweet, I'd like to impress her on the first date.
Suba's is Excellent. Two classically trained Chefs from New Orleans. (Husband/wife team/owners.) The female is a Pastry Chef by training. Amazing dessert options available by her hand.
A very nice Rib Eye, Baked Potato, butter/sour cream, side salad with fresh Blue cheese dressing, copious fresh baked rolls, I believe was about $13-15. Not bad. Those with me had Blackened Catfish, Shrimp Alfredo, etc. etc. Everything excellent. We go there quite often as a family get together. (Was there about 2 weeks ago.) Packed on Sunday. Reservations required, unless you want to stand/wait forever for a table to clear. There are only about 15-20 Tables, if that. Very nice place. Excellent service. Best eatery in this area.
That is another consideration on/for my first date with Karen.

If you made it to Smoketree you were just a minute or so from two of the best eatery's in the area. Bella's for the best Italian and Stonewall's for the best prime rib known to man or woman. Stonewall's is not cheap, 30.00 or so a head but one of the top 5 steakhouse's in NC. Their fish and chips for around 15.00 is second to none. 0 -

Bella's, two locations, 3585 Tynecastle hwy, first and original, needs a good cleaning but food is great. Second location behind Bugger King in Boone. Same owners and food but a lot cleaner.
Stonewall's, 344 Shawneehaw Avenue in Banner Elk. Busy place, best to make reservations unless you come early.
I think Tuesdays is comfort food on the menu.
You can find both on Google, menus and the works.
Don't stop at the BBQ place just past Smoketree.0 -
Oh and Stonewall's is under new ownership for the last year or so. One owner chefs and runs the kitchen and the other is the "front man". Great guys. 0 -
If you are in Franklin, NC you ned to stop at Caffe' Rel. It is located in a gas station but the food is great. Check it out if you get a chance.
