A good one landed in my lap today! One for the rack!

This past Friday a friend of mine stopped at my office to ask if I could look at an old gun his Dad had. His Dad passed away about a year ago or so.
Apparently the gun has hung over the kitchen door since the 60's at his Folks house!
(His Dad had a modest collection years ago, and I was fortunate to buy most of it many years ago!)

Apparently an old acquaintance of his Father asked him about the gun. He claimed his Father always told him, he'd sell it to him someday......
Any way, he shows up with a very nice but filthy and grimy Savage Model 1904 "Special" 22 S,L, & LR little Rifle.
This thing has beautifully figured wood and excellent hand cut checkering! It cocks automatically and has a built in peep sight.
After some cleaning and oiling, it's one damn fine little rifle! Bore is a little dark, but plenty of good rifling.
I told him, my guess is maybe $200.00. "Boys Rifles" can be all over the board. Maybe there is another hundred in it, maybe.....But, I'd pay $200.00 if the other guy isn't interested. Just because, I like it and it was his Dads. (I always liked his Dad!)

My Friend smiled and said, The old guy said it was worth about $40.00!
Well, he was offered the gun for $200.00 and the Old Man Couldn't believe it! So.......He called me back and I got it!
Nice little rifles like this can be tough to find! And I didn't own a Savage yet!
Apparently, the old guy wants my contact information since "I'm stupid enough to pay $200.00 for a $40.00 gun!"
I said, pass it along! I can't wait to find out what the Old Guy has!!

    Sounds like an old Trap Door Springfield, some sort of 20 gauge double, and a lever action 308. Winchester 88? Savage 99?
    Any way, any day now he will drop by with them.......All 3 sound good!

    That's a damn nice knife! Of course, it will probably just sit in one of my knife drawers until I croak! :lol:
    But I like it, and I like owning it! :D

    While most examples extant will be marked ".22 s l lr" you may encounter the odd example marked "regular .22"...

    When .22 rimfire ammunition manufacturers began to produce so called "high speed - hi speed - hi vel - high velocity - super speed" loads and variants in a branding / advertising / sales market share war centered around hotter faster lighter high and hyper velocity proprietary loads there was concern amongst some rifle manufacturers focused on whether the guns would hold up to the chamber pressure produced by this ammo and chamber / throat erosion and action failure / hot gases escaping near the eyes...

    Rifles were improved to handle the ammunition developments - but some makers had concerns and marked the guns accordingly - specifically your gun was produced for a short period marked for "regular" .22 ammo only (a vague warning or liability waiver)

    I have only seen this pictured in reference books - I have never handled one in person.

    Historically interesting developmental aside / footnote.

    For me it's a rifle that belonged to my father's great uncle who helped complete the ALCAN highway - the stretch where Alaska and Canada meet...

    Savage Arms Company Model 1909 detachable magazine fed slide action take-down rifle SER# 106821 A - a .22 rimfire repeating rifle...

    His name was Sean and he emigrated from county cork in Ireland and joined the Navy

    It's an odd rifle - the configuration is unusual
