We used to use a garmin nuvi and a Tom tom. But haven't in years. My phone has a gps in it. As long as you've got cellular coverage you've got updated maps. Some even show traffic etc...

Only down side are the battery drain (just use a charger) and the need for cellular coverage to download the map when you first start out (some apps will store the map so no need for cellular).

Keep in mind that some phones with gps actually hav a gps chip in them, so they don't triangulate on cell towers...

I'd go with a cell phone vs. gps.

Any of the Garmin Nuvi with lifetime maps.

Up date the maps once a year and you are good to go.

No one likes Magellan? I am new to using a GPS navigator and I have refurbished Magellans. They seem to work OK, but my wife's cell phone seems to work a little faster and more accurately most of the time.

Anything made by Garmin is top notch.

I use my cell phone with a free app called Waze. It works great. It shows traffic, police, a car on the side of the road or if something is in the road. Also slowed traffic and crashes.

Another thing i find useful is it has the speed of the road on the screen and how fast you are running.

I have both Garmin and TomTom, but I use Google Map on my phone. It's as good as both and I don't have to worry about having something hanging down in my face

If you're not going to use google on your phone, go with a Garmin and be sure it's a model that comes with lifetime updates.

My wife has one. I don't even know what kind. Pure crap.
Maybe it's how it was set up. But it'll send you miles in the wrong direction, only to backtrack to where you should've been in the first place. We don't use that to navigate for me anymore.
    Her phone is waaaay better.

I've had several Garmin's, but dislike the Nuvi. It takes a long time to find satellites. And, the rechargeable battery doesn't hold a charge for long; it can't be used as a handheld GPS, you've got to keep it plugged in.

I like my Garmin NUVI. I use it daily keeping it powered with a cord to the cigar lighter. It has never let me down for the past five years of heavy use. Free map updates are awesome.

Used to use Garmin, but haven't for years. Use Google Maps on my phone now.

I am looking for a reasonably priced portable gps system to keep in the car
I am not concerned about mounting, just something my wife can use while I am driving
