Just heard on a Los Angeles radio station that during a high speed chase a LA cop fired over 70 rounds at a fleeing car and was requesting an ammo resupply during the chase. They said bullets were lodged in buildings, trees, and automobiles along the way. Yee Haa !!!!!

That is awesome! I bet the civilians along his route were impressed with the his tenacious pursuit of the bad guy. The LAPD should spin this and say no one gets away even if we have to shoot at you until we run out of ammo!
He should have shot out his window and started in on the guy with the pump gun
I can tell you when the bullets are flying and the Adrenalin is flowing your trigger finger can get really itchy. We got in a gun fight in Hadethia one time and one of my guys emptied 10 magazines in about 5 min. When it was over He was asking for ammo I said why did you shoot up 10 mags were you on auto? He's like "No I was on semi but I didn't want to die for lack of shooting back"..................I was cracking up 0 -

I have been lucky enough over the years to forge some lifelong friendships with many fine law enforcement officers . Several of whom I count as best friends . The sheer level of incompetence displayed here just completely dumbfounded me. At a minimum they need to be fired or have to walk the midnight beat checking back doors in the business district like the days of old 0 -

You're right. The officer driving, Pedersen was a probationary officer, which I am assuming means he was new and in field training. So the officer in the passenger seat should have been his field training officer and supervisor. According to the Washington Post, Officer Pedersen fired 64 of the 76 rounds, and he's the one driving! My first reaction to the video was that the passenger officer delayed using force to me indicating he was not comfortable with what was going on, but that's just my reaction. Peer pressure in this job is very high so it wouldn't surprise me if a normally competent officer would stand by or even start participating in a scenario as it goes bad. Based on what I've read of the incident, the level of forced used, shooting from a moving vehicle into a moving vehicle was not justified. Perhaps it's regional, but I doubt it....shooting while driving a vehicle is reserved for the severest of circumstances such as returning fire into a vehicle that has occupants who are actively shooting at your police car. They were responding to a man in a mental health crisis, who displayed a handgun and then attempted to flee, not attempted to engage them. They were not chasing an armed car jacker that just shot innocents, or someone that just committed homicide or shot at or shot another cop. Now I make my comments based on my experience, and I a few years ago experienced a similar situation and the suspect, who was a wanted felon entered his vehicle with a gun pointed at his head, which led to a pursuit and eventually a very long stand off in a house. At the time he was walking to his car, I could have shot him. I had a bead on him through my Eotech on my AR-15, I could have popped him in the head as he stopped by the open door of his car and looked right at me, a .38 revolver stuck to his right temple. I could have ended it right there, but I wouldn't have been justified. Still i could have shot him, killed him and said he moved the gun towards me, but then I'd spend the rest of my life knowing that this wasn't true. Hindsight, if I had killed him I'd have prevented what later turned into a mess but that's the nature of hindsight. At no time do I recall planning to shoot through my windshield, unless he had started shooting at me. I did have my rifle in a position to throw up on the dash had I needed, not a ideal position to fire when performing a high speed chase down curvy country roads.
Sad for the family, they called police to try and intervene and get their son help, and these two chased him down and him to death. They are fortunate they are not facing criminal charges.0 -
Personally knew of one event, 1960s, armed robbery- clerk was shot- PD in pursuit of bad guys who were shooting at pursuing officer. Officer armed with a S&W Mdl 10. While driving, shooting left handed, he hit the bad guy driver with shot #5, ending pursuit.
The citation he got did not mention that shots 1,2,3 and 4 shot the spotlight off his police car.0 -
I too recall an ongoing chase/ firefight Many years ago a pair of robbers held a local bank. Cops arrived and pursuit ensued down a major highway . I am at radio shack listening to this unfold on the scanner . Suddenly you hear a scared trembling voice come over the air , ? they ( bad guys) are shooting at us , what do we do ?? Patrol dispatch Sargent radios back ? you have a gun shootback!? A few miles down the road the bad guys wreck and are apprehended without further incident 0 -
